Hi, I'm new to this Forum so please bear with me if I'm repeating previous posts that have dealt with this or any similar problems with gear selection, I purchaseed a 2004 Doblo recently with 55k on the clock, it is a 1.9 JTD MPV Version, Active model.

it ran OK for a few weeks then the gear selection became stiff, "knotchy" in all gears and the gear lever has actually stuck in gear on a number of occasions.

Upon Inspection the cables at the gearbox end are worn , both cables have split gaitors and there's rust at the gearbox ends.

It looks to me as if the previous owners or their mechanics have been attempting a repair as or disconnected the cable arrangement because there are two new bolts holding the cable bracket in place.

In attempting to diagnose the problem, I had a look at the Fiat e-book for the Doblo that suggests the problem is incorrect lubrication of the Cables. I gave the cables a good spray with WD40 and managed to get some under the ripped gaitors and the cable ends and ball joints. This Temporarily sorts the problem.

Because the cables are obviously worn I have to replace these. There are a number of replacements available on Ebay However none for my specific model, some more expensive spares sellers state they do all models of the Doblo up to 2009, but I cannot afford to pay hundreds of pounds to buy new cables.

Can anyone advise me, Are the cables from all models up to 2009 the same and therefore Interchangeable?

Don't worry too much about it being an active or dynamic model.

You'll need cables from another 1.9jtd they differ depending on gearbox and engine configuration, you can use EPER at the top of the forum to look up the part numbers for these parts.

Brand new from the fiat dealer each cable is about £90-100 so if you're spending 'hundreds of pounds' on eBay maybe better to buy new and get the right bits first time.

The cables rust then shred inside the sheath which is why they stick yours sound like it might be on its last legs and may snap soon if not changed

Hi Andy, thanks for replying, I got a good set of cables off ebay , and because of the job fitting them was quite complicated, not beyond my mental capacity but since I'm disabled a bit too much for me, So the cables were changed By a local Mechanic whom agreed that the cables were most likely the problem and for a while I didn't have a problem just pottering about in the car on short journeys.

However - Since then I've been on the motorway a few times, the problem appears again only if I push the car quite hard, its as if the gear change becomes more difficult as the car heats up,the hotter the car gets the stiffer the gear change becomes

So I'm back to square one with this gear selection problem, I moved my car seat a bit farther forward, to see if my clutch foot was reaching the floor ok, I've examined the Clutch Hydraulics, which appear to be working ok, there is however some loose play on the clutch pedal but the clutch appears to be ok its picking up in all gears and not slipping.

does anyone know could it be the gearbox oil level being too low? as the selection only becomes difficult once the car is hot and if I stop for a few minutes it does appear to go back to normal quite quickly, what Im thinking is as the car is run and getting hotter, the gears will be picking up oil , the oil if not enough it could be overheating and the gearbox then becoming stuck in gear, I had this before with a Ford when the Gearbox was overheating and just wondered if it could be a similar problem.

Help Please
