Hi,

Hard to describe this but I'll have a go.

Clutch works fine but when depressing the pedal all is normal for the first ¾ of its travel, then there is momentary more resistance (very slight) and then after what I can only describe as a bump (felt through the pedal and a sound from under the bonnet) the travel to the floor is normal.

I suspect it's something to do with the slave cylinder.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Re: Clutch pedal travel question....loud squeak/creak

Well, it hasn't healed itself and gone away (wishful thinking). However on short journeys of a few miles all is fine.

Had to do a long trip recently. All was fine for about 50 miles then the symptoms returned:

There is this very loud squeak/creak when the clutch pedal is depressed.
It sounds almost like door creaking and happens more on the 'depress' that the release of the pedal.
It does this stationary or moving, it doesn't matter.
I can actually feel it through the pedal (which might also be a tad stiffer when noise comes)
The noise is loudest outside the car.

The clutch itself isn't slipping or anything and it's definitely not the 'pedal' itself as I've lubed that up well.

Took the battery box out to have a look at the slave cylinder and linkage; all seemed OK.

Any ideas? Could the release bearing assembly possibly need a spot of lubrication, is this doable?

I couldn't get to the bottom of this one so took the car into the local dealership.

The very helpful service manager wasn't sure and recommended leaving it to develop. He also said that sometimes the lubrication of the vertical clutch fork shaft/plain bearing can dry up and ultimately cause severe stiffness when depressing the clutch pedal.

Of course there is no easy way to get a drop of oil in. So took the battery box off again and managed to squirt some spray lubricant around the top of the shaft (hoping that enough would find its way into the bearing). Did this daily for 3 days.

Well, I've done a few long journeys since then and so far so the problem hasn't come back. Fixed, possibly? What a relief!!

Cheers
