Hi I have a fiat doblo 1.9 cargo van 2003 done 98000 miles when i start it more often than not engine management light stays on and accelerator does not respond properly, restarting engine solves this and light goes out and van drives perfect for about 5-10 miles then light comes back on and engine cuts out, restarting seems to solve this but does not always drive well. so far engine has only cut out while sitting in trafic or going very slow maybe 5 miles an hour, i am worried it may do this at speed so i m not to keen on using at the moment. Today engine cut out first few times i started it but when started made it home then cut out again just as i was parking also started reving eratically without me touching accelerator. a garage got code and said it might be the diesel pump. Also glow plug light flashes when van starts then goes out after about 20 sec and fuel gauge is always stuck on quarter full never moves. If anyone one has any ideas i would be very gratefull. thanks

Hi
I am disappointed that you have had no replies yet as I have a 2002 doblo cargo diesel 1.9 and I have had exactly the same problem.
It got worse until it started cutting out in traffic as well as slow speed.
A garage has told me that it may be the fuel pump but they are not sure and it will cost £300 to take it off and test it.
If it is a fuel pump the garage have said a new one will be £1400 + VAT.
The last time I drove it about 12 miles to another garage it ran perfectly and on arrival it restarted perfectly about a dozen times.
The next day the fault was back.
As it sometimes runs OK I wonder if it is the pump or something electrical.
Any HELP would be most welcome

Replace the fuel filter and drain the water separator. You probably have to reprint.

Hi
The fuel filter has been changed but where is the water separator please.
Cheers

Hi All
I have been reading through the forum and it seems this problem comes up quite often.
I have at long last had my doblo fixed.
It did not cost me £1400 for a new pump but a local man at a small garage removed the pump and apparently found a wiring fault.
In all he changed the fuel filter renewed a glow plug and fixed the firing fault on the pump for a total of £250.
When a previous garage wanted £300 just to remove the pump and test it I feel I have done rather well and will be going to this local man again.
I hope this helps any one with a similar problem.
Happy motoring
Cheers
Ray

After changing the Diesel Fuel filter, we had a similar problem of fluctuating revs when idling at a junction, engine warning light light on, and sometimes an engine surge and cutout; once the engine had got up to working temperature.

Local garage and my thoughts were fault in Fuel pump.

Before going to the pump specialist, having read that one of the fuel pressure sensors worked on a diaphram basis:- With the engine Off, I unscewed the sensor mount a small way, which let a wee bit of diesel fluid escape, and then gently tightened again when I was sure it was squarely seated. This seems to have rebalanced the sensor.

Problem seems to have been solved; hopefully without the need to have the pump refurbished as the local garage suggested.

Another mechanic friend has suggested that this sensor can be thrown out of balance if water (I assume condensation or contaminated diesel) has entered the system
