It could be the egr. That could need cleaning out or replacing if it's too far gone or if the solenoid is broken. It may also be the dpf, it could be clogged and need a regen or a replacement (expensive). It may also be some other fault though as the loss of power is just the computer protecting the engine. Any other symptoms? If you get the codes read they will point you towards the cause.

"cheers will av alook !!! and that was my next thought was to take to garage!
but wanted to ask the question first, will post once i get sorted hopefully :-0!!!!

"just wanted to mention when i said we lose power i meant it cuts out" ??? whether this is any different ?? cheers

Yes big difference
That could be the crank sensor
When it gets hot - the contact inside pull apart as it expands - no signal produced
So the engine doesn't know when to inject or spark (diesel/petrol) and stalls

Once its cooled down - it works again - no problems till it warms up again

Idearly - Get the Fiat Ecu scan (multi-ecu scan now) and get the fault code
it might point you more in the correct direction -instead of trying part after part till you hit the correct one

Diagnostics are there to help - take advantage of them

hello also a newbie with same problem. Fiat doblo cargo van 91k miles had for 1 year and no probs. But in the last week had trouble starting then started and ran for 1 mile then engine management light came on and engine died. With that the power steering goes as well as the brakes. AA said replace fuel filter garage did that but today stuck in morrisons car park would not start again left it for a while kept trying and ten minutes later started. Any ideas. What is an egr and a dpf?

cheers ziggy for your imput will check it out an get back to let you all know out come !!!!(y)

looking on other parts of this site the dpf could be the problem. ive been doing lots of small run jobs and this maybe the problem as the particulates build up in the filter. Im going to try a long run at higher speeds this may blow the particulates out. Does this sound plausible or am i going to waste petrol? battychess

Cutting out would be symptomatic of the crank sensor. Getting the codes read would be the best first step.

An egr is an exhaust recirculation valve. It allows exhaust gases into the combustion chamber under certain conditions. It often gets clogged with soot and can be cleaned with variable success.

A dpf is a diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off later on, usually on the motorway. It's in the exhaust system. They can become clogged after repeated short runs or stop start use. If they are badly clogged they sometimes can't be cleaned through a "forced regeneration" process. If that happens they are expensive to replace at £700 or more. Some people have them removed and the ecu reprogrammed to "forget" about the dpf. It's a bit of a grey area, I'm not doing it but it really is personal choice.
