I'm definitely an amateur DIY'r so I was surprised at how (fairly) straight forward it was.
I'd recommend this job to anyone who's not sure about tackling a DIY job but wants to save huge garage bills.
Got the parts from Euro Car Parts. Just give them your reg number online and they make sure the correct parts are delivered. They offer big discounts too, nearly 50% cheaper than my local parts supplier.

Cambelt is due in 3000 miles, so I want to do that sooner rather than later.
Is this a job for a keen amateur? I would have a mate helping who's done them before.

maybe no as other things maybe :bang: lining up/special tools? correct tension on belt and bearing/guides and pump replacement, and if fitted wrong =new engine

Agree also look for a garage that offers a warranty with the belt change. May cost a little more but peace of mind and cover if it goes wrong is worth every penny. A really good garage will let you watch the work and learn what the process is and the tools you need.

would a garage let an outsider to come in to see whats going on? its not a public place but a work area with hazardous items around due to health and safety rules.(y)

I did a guide for this...

My only real problem was which pad to buy as there were two types for my model - I think one had 'wings'.

With regards the cambelt, I've done a few over the years & never had a problem - but I've always had a haynes manual to guide me.

The belt itself is fairly straightforward as there are a number of pointers on the belt that line up with marks on the various cogs - but you have to do this precisely. Belt tension has always (for me at any rate) been achieved by a hydraulic or spring-loaded tensioner.
Checkout how much a decent mech would charge - sometimes it can be more cost effective, the mech knows exactly what they are doing, they have insurance to cover if there is a problem, you don't have the aggro (grazed knuckles / awkward or tight spaces etc)

oh dont forget to get water pump changed.

Should this be done if you're changing the cambelt? Would the water pump be knackered after 70,000 miles?

I wish I'd spotted this before I started the job. Oh well, it's done now and I didn't have any problems. The pads were right, maybe more by luck than judgement.

Or maybe I've got one of those cars where specs changed slightly but they had a shedload of 'old' style still to be used up?

anything driven or guided on most cars are replaced if cambelt driven,if you do a cheap tb change and guide/tensioner fails you will be buying a new engine the same as pump failure also.:D
