Hi all,

My Doblo just had new timing belt kit and water pump fitted two weeks ago at Arnold Clark.
On the day I collected it I noticed smoke/steam coming from under bonnet.
I called and they asked me to return asap. They kept it overnight and gave me a Punto to use. Called me next day and said it was water pump seal and it all fixed.

Offered me a half price service for £140.00 for my troubles but I said I would leave it for now.

I have been noticing a slight ticking/occasional rattle ever since but my mate said it all in my head.

Went out to work last night and after one hire I was stationary in taxi rank I noticed a noise from engine. Got out car and it was a terrible rattle/knocking from under bonnet on driver side.
As I revved up slowly above 1000 it went away completely. But when idling it was there all the time. Very loud.
Drove home with no problems but noise there whenever car is stationary. Not driven today at all but I did start it and was still the same.

Going to call Arnold Clark first thing tomorrow as was closed today. Do you think it could be idlers/tensioners. I came up with that after hours of looking on net. But I'm no mechanic!

Any advice appreciated

Hi mate,if they fitted full kit with new idler and every thing tensioned correctly, shouldn't be that. Could be the tensioning idler on the alternator belt, this usually more squeaky than knock. Also could be bottom pulley starting to delaminate, these are made with a rubber centre to reduce vibration and can break up causing the metal parts to touch or they may have left bolts loose. If noise goes above a 1000 revs more likely the freewheel pulley on alternator is seizing up. Lastly have had bearing break up in Power steering pump, but very rare and you can usually alter the pitch of that noise by turning steering. hope this helps and good luck,John.

Just another thought, if its got Aircon, pump bearings can go and make a load of noise, usually front of engine drivers side, if its that and you're not bothered about aircon, on some you can remove one of the belt idlers and fit a shorter non aircon belt, so it doesn't drive the pump,John.

Thanks for replying.

My model hasn't got aircon so not that. But Iwent out and started the car and turned steering wheel both ways. Noise still the same. Got the RAC man who lives across road from me. He thinks same as me that belt tensioners not fitted properly.
I will call Arnold Clark at 8 and book it in. No choice. Will let u know....cheers

hi again.

Good news. Was the crankshaft pulley. They replacing the pulley, alternator belt and new bolts.
Was really worried timing belt had caused major problems.
Quoted me 270ish so I asked about discount as I never took my half price service yet.
They doing fitting free of charge and only charging me for parts...126 pounds.

So relieved I can work again.

Glad you are getting it sorted, had bottom pulleys break up before as said, just as well they are only charging for parts, its only 30-45 mins work max,so £146 to fit seems a might excessive, maybe I need to move there, hard enough getting paid a fair price here:).can't understand why they didn't advise you of of condition when they had it off to do timing belt, All the best John
