Off Topic Doblo Snow Treker!

I'm glad you got back on this one. I hope I didn't add to any offence Scott. Enjoy the snowy times ahead!

Sleep tight oldskool, mine have the snowflake/mountain symbol, they also have M&S on them so all bases covered.

Scott, I'm sure you'll see improved performance in the snow over standard tyres, don't forget those pics when it snows! (y)

If you live in an area that suffers from poor snow clearance or high levels of the white stuff falling from the sky then any more open/deeper tread pattern has got to be an improvement, and well done for not contributing to the corporate coffers of tyre companies that are suddenly telling us we can't do without winter tyres.

Even during the worst of last year's snow we didn't have a great deal of problems round here but where there was quite a lot of snow I just used a modicum of intelligence (driving skill) and the diesel's torque.

If you want to avoid skidding then bring your speed down earlier using engine braking, especially with a diesel, and for traction try moving off on tickover, especially with a diesel and at walking speed saw the wheel left to right to left and you can gain quite a lot of useful grip simply from the tread on the shoulders of the tyres.

However, you know your local weather conditions better than those outside your area so good luck and you'll probably be able to set up a lucrative sideline pulling BMW X 5/3/1s, Mercedes MLs and Volvo XC90/70s up hills.

Those tyres will do well in the snow and there not mud tyres as someone said they have holes for spikes to be screwed in to grip ice and snow not mud.

Hi.
A bit of a slanging match is going on here! Don't always believe what you read on the net!
No doubt I will get the last laugh when I overtake all of you with FWD cars in my Skoda Estelle with standard tyres and no doubt a Citroen 2CV will be right behind with its 125x15 Michelin "X",s :D:D

Hi.
You are all probably say what a load of rot that bloke is going on about. I can assure you it isn't rot its sound engineering.
Firstly on the Skoda, it had its weight behind the rear "axle" not the best distribution of weight but ideal for "pushing" the car as you accelerate even more weight is placed on the driving wheels, the totally opposite to FWD which will spin the front wheels unless you are careful. Front engine rear drive is no good as the initial weight over the driving wheels is low and you also have to overcome the resistance of the front wheels that may be sticking in impacted snow. The other advantage of the rear engine Skoda is the heavily criticised swing axles, these can be used in advantage in snow as the camber radically changes with suspension movement and in snow there is a lot of jiggling this causes changes in track and effectively displaces snow laterally thus increasing grip. This is one reason why the Skoda for such a low power was so successful in rallying.
The Citroen is an engineering "Tour de force" in reality the only proper FWD ever made, it has in board front brakes interlinked anti dive suspension which is highly compliant and many other novel features, the use of narrow tyres, light weight low power and suspension that is so compliant make the car another good vehicle in snow. I could go on but I wont!

I used to have an Estelle. I live on a hill so having the weight of the engine on the rear wheels made it easy to get up the hill when it snowed. However on coming back home, with no weight on the front wheels, it was a case of point and hope.

Hi
I used to have a Estelle very good in the snow, used to tow my brother on his ski`s at the industrial estate, as for handling on the front end used to put two bags of sand in the boot worked a treat keeping the front wheels on the ground, very entertaining car to drive.

this is why the boys at Leyland in 1970 gave us the Range-Rover huge ground clearance huge coil spring suspension fantastic approach/departure angles etc.

I'm not really bothered on the Snow v mud tyre argument (i've bought my fair share of the latter)

these tyres look cool and i want to see a Doblo Van with massive Tyres driving though shed loads of snow so if they don't work (and I'm sure they will) i'll be disappointed

Can't wait to see the pics of them on the van ;)

Back in the day, I used to live in Yorkshire & the only 2 ways out of the road where I lived involved a steep slope either end - although one end also went down into the valley - quite steeply! With fWD I had no problems driving up the hill, as long as I turned the car round and reversed up - amazing how many people struggled until they watched me.
Later on I had my first foray into the world of Fiat - albeit a polski Fiat.
but with a boot full of bricks the hills posed no problems (along with the town and country remoulds)

Hi Scott, these look the part. You have made them very noticeable and I'm sure they will be great in the bad weather.
Only snag is that they are not load rated for the Doblo, so if you have a bump or get noticed by VOSA or the dibble, it won't be the snow that you should worry about the depth of !!! Fiat spec is a minimum load index of 88. :(

It's impossible to tell from just looking at a tyre if the compound used is suitable for winter. Scott's tyres look like they are true winter tyres (sipes are there for ice, they're made in italy not north america and they have holes for studs!). The best way to be sure is to look them up on the Swede's list of approved tyres. I've been using winter tyres from Finland for many many years and they never used to have a mountain pictogram on (although now they usually do). Cant post links as i haven't got 5 posts, but if you put www infront it'll take you to a Swedish definition of a winter tyre:

transportstyrelsen.se/en/road/Vehicles/winter-tyres/

Fat H is right i've only had a doblo for 7 months (cargo maxi power) and there was very little choice of winter boots with an adequate load rating, i ended up with sunny's which to be fair have been surprisingly excellent!

Hope the link? helps . . .

CRAZY!!!!! :bang:

Well what can i say to all this?

Ermmm....

Congratulations to you all for contributing to the discussion. Even as far to the old Estelle!. Well at least good memories are uncovered if nothing else.

Well as far as the load rating goes i did initially take advice about load rating but its never loaded! AT ALL! i have extremely bright alloys in summer and even when pulled its never been an issue and they have not got the load ratings. nor the seats in the back (with child in child seat) (tax saying LGV etc) just the tyre depth they concentrate on, some nugget who does not really care unless he/she getting something....i never give no grief so they continue every time no harm... (i once talked myself out of speeding ticket though and still to this day i don't understand i what exactly happened at Junction 32). when its on its butt plugs on the back axle i know its loaded then! it never even gets close! (only on cornering! :slayer: ) that surely keeps your ticker going!

anyway as this is about these tyres, heres the info,

when on tarmac/road very noisy!!! seems to getting less as the tyres wear! (these wont last long she is going to eat them up although after 2500 miles urban and motorway they are wearing fine! just lost the top 1-2m the indent for studs has gone. but hole still there! (y)

so off road - AMAZING! never got stuck once. even went as far as covering the entire van in mud, (when i find picture il post it) only thing can be seen is windscreen and mirrors) well i enjoyed that 3hours i must say. i have a well loved route that can only be done once and a passenger is needed for gates!! quite fun! 4 times in two years so far!!!

snow - had one spot where it was about 4-5 inch and i had to drive 2hrs for it!!! well worth it, not an issue again, usual snow driving techniques and the courage of a lion.! porr dobbin, she does me proud, although one night i did have to wrap her engine up real tight to stop the frost as the morning before was a little rough. only for the cold weather to go and the glow plug light start flashing. GREAT!

so she had some new glow plugs fitted, had her egr valve cleaned.(mpg was getting low) and manifold and K&N air filter steamed cleaned and re oiled. also she had a new oil and filter fitted..also just added some forte diesel cleaner in too on a full tank! she is now running sweet (apart form the flywheel judder) but thats on another thread.) i got 72.3 mpg on a 93mile journey. (from my dads to mine which is 22.1 mile i can get it 99.9mpg, no LIE! video evidence for that soon! when it comes from the wonderful eBay. sick of been abused sometimes on the road and really expect something to happen, if i have an 8 camera system fitted do you think i will be covered? (as long as i am in the sweet and Mary!)

anyways enough rambling, i have got utter dedication which i fear nobody else has when it comes to the doblo (mk1 2003) plus i am the only owner of mine! except my girlfriend 2 years ago for insurance's purposes! well if anybodys got this far i was looking over receipts and labour costs and everything else (except fuel and oil) including the 5.300k i payed for van back in 04 i have just over 18k in this vehicle.NO ****! i am currently logging it on into a simple reading list and i will also post this soon. its a serious list of parts. well it is a fiat doblo, they must think that people buy them to put in the front rooms or something?

over and out, picture of them on van soon when i can find camera!!!! i have 2year old girl who keeps getting hold of things and hiding them!!! little bugger! :slayer:

Okay, I am sold on fitting winter tyres on the Doblo. I just cannot believe how much grip I have had with mine in the last snowy 24 hours since I fitted the Goodyear Ultragrip 8 before Xmas.

I have not yet found a hill that it won't go up despite the 4 inches of snow that fell. I have lost track of the number of cars and even 4wd's that I have passed that have been stranded on hills. It brakes really well, obviously not as good as normal but it still is very impressive. For the first time ever I have been able to reverse up my 1 in 6 driveway when its covered in snow, and get my car up the steep exit road from my estate which has always been nigh on impossible when the white stuff falls. All done totally without drama, just the Traction control light flashing a few times on the dash.

Very impressed. They are even quite good in the dry as well. :worship:
