Hello,

How easy is it to replace the light stalk on the Doblo?

My head light flash doesn't work and when flicking from dipped to full beam and back sometimes there is a delay where I have no lights!

I had this on a Ford once and the stalk was kaputt.

Any pointers on replacing it would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Ewan

Blimey. Thanks very much for that. Very much appreciated.

I will have a read through when I get home.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago.

When switching from dipped to main beam the main beam wouldn’t always switch on immediately and darkness prevailed for a second or so - a bit scary!!.

Since a replacement switch is over £100 I thought it would be worth trying a squirt of switch/contact cleaner/lubricant (not a water dispersant type aerosol)

This is what I did and it seems to be working OK now.

1. Remove steering wheel lower plastic cover (a few screws and a clip – if I remember correctly). This exposes the switch and stalk assembly.

2. There is a rubber dust washer on the lower stem of the stalk, lift this up and squirt a little switch cleaner into the switch using the thin tube adaptor which comes with the aerosol.

3. Operate the switch a few times (without the ignition key inserted).

4. Leave for a few minutes for the solvent to evaporate and test switch function.

Good luck.

Ah brill.

I will try that on Saturday, thanks!

WD40 is a water dispersant isn't it? What spray did you use?

Thanks.

I have exactly the same issue and have tried squirting contact cleaner/lubricant behind the rubber dust shield to no avail. Have given up on flash and wave people out if I need to, likewise I don't ever use high beam. Was thinking about putting in a separate switch.

Well, I bought some contact cleaner from Halfords (£4) and took the steering column cover off, gave it a damn good spray and it now works a treat!!

You need to make sure that you squirt it in using the tube attachment and also if you move the stalk in different positions you get access to different little holes to squirt it into. Squirt it into all and move it around a lot. Let it dry and then test.

Flashing now works and there is no delay at all when flicking from dipped to full and back.

Happy days!

Thank guys,

Ewan

Excellent news...and it's amazing now how many other switches, volume controls etc you'll find to benefit from the contact cleaner treatment....

Cheers

Yeah true.

I remember that now from the days of my 1275GT mini back in the day. Amazing the memories that come back from the smell of that spray stuff!!

Cheers!

WD40 can sometimes provide temporary respite BUT it is designed to disperse water then leave a thin film on whatever it touches - which may impede the switch contacts.
Specialist switch and contact cleaner is designed to remove the miniscule carbon deposits that can build up with the arc you get on electrical contacts (no matter how quick you make contact, there will always be some sparking.

If you want to change switch;

Disconnect battery (wait 10 minutes after)
Remove airbag
Remove steering wheel
Remove upper & lower cowlings (covers)
Undo switch connectors
Undo 5mm allen key bolt on switch retaining ring
Remove switch by pulling forward (towards you) and off steering shaft.

Rebuild in reverse.

Excellent news!

Ironic though that I was able to fix the light stalk for £4 and then had to pay considerably more for new brakes and rear shocks this weekend! ouch!
