i wont bore you with the details, but i am thinking of getting a doblo to convert to a small camper, as i have a ldv lwb xht now i need to down size. so i need a high top doblo, am i better off with deisel or petrol it will be for everday car as well as camping, as i am selling my 150 t-jet like i said needs must.

any buying tips, would be handy and any ones to avoid?

thanks boys and girls (y)

As you will probably read, steer clear of the Multijet 120 unless you will do a lot of long, fast, motorway trips. It has a DPF.

Otherwise the Multijet 105 or JTD (100bhp) will serve you well as they have the necessary power to carry around what I can only assume wil be a much heavier load than usual due to the camper conversion.

Lots say that the 1.3 multijet is good (chain cam I think) but it might lack power. I would avoid a petrol unless you wont do the miles to warrent diesel. I've heard that the petrol can be a little slow.

If you're thinking of the newest Doblo's (2010-) then I don't know, have barely seen them.

the 120 is a bit thirsty - and probably even moreso with camping gear on board.
I didn't like the idea of lugging all that extra weight around every day so I opt for the pop up stuff & chuck everything in the back on a Friday night.
6m x 3m pop up gazebo can be erected in no time - even in the rain, if two of us grab a brolly & take a corner each it takes a few moments & once partially opened, you can do the rest from under the roof even the sidewalls can be hooked on & pegged down from the inside.
The car sleeps one end & holds down the frame. we sleep on a blow up double bed (up in moments with its own pump) inside a pop up tent - this thing unfolds itself!
The only major weight is a gas bottle and a couple of home made picnic tables - much sturdier to sit and work on than the flimsy shop bought stuff. Mostly 6mm ply but 9mm for the main frame.

Petrol is actually very smooth and flexible, ok its 18 seconds 0-60 but no worries about dpf's dmf's. However since youre used to LDV,I would suggest look at other longer vans, trouble with the dobbie is its very high, and fairly short and has a bulkheads etc that gets in the way of what length there is so sleeping could be an issue. Maybe have a look at scudo.

What I meant by all of this is that the 120bhp has a dpf and the others don't.

If you're thinking petrol than go for the 1.4 as the 1.2 barely moves! ;)

Have a look at this: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/fiat/doblo/estate-2001/summary/

1.9 JTD, grab a low mileage model (I paid 3k for a 4 year old model with 46k miles. Change belt & water pump and thats you set, the engine is very softly tuned so under no great stress and will do massive mileages. They pull well with a trailer and fully loaded, tax is £86/6months, cheap insurance & I never get less than 50mpg.

Many companies do motorhome conversions (just google) and there was a French couple who did a great DIY conversion with sleeping area on the roof:)

ok its been a while, give me your opinion on this please.
360435442382 on ebay, those that know me will know why i like this one, but is it any good ?
Hi i have a fiat doblo for sale 1.9 jtd diesel Highroof ideal for conversion to camper van Lots done since January this year 2012 New starter motor new back leaf springs new handbrake cables new crankshaft pulley new clutch fitted Tel Dennis on 07784000196

i thought it a little expensive, but i have emailed him and i am hoping he will do a deal on my self build camper which i am stugling to sell, so i depends on how much he wants to give me for my camper.
i have seen these go real cheap, so what year did dfp start, and do you think i would be better off with a normal doblo for tank issue ?

Please don't limit your engine choice. A dpf is no problem at all, you take off the pipe and knock all the innards out, getting a remap at the same time. I have had the 1.9 JTD for 130,000m and now have a 120 mjet. I've taken out the rear seats as I use it as a van running at least half loaded all the time. I never get less than 48mpg on mixed town and country driving and I don't hang about.

I love the comment from Parkers review on the 1.4 petrol
"What are you likely to buy next?
The 1.9 Multijet."
