I'm thinking of part ex'ing my 58 Doblo 1.9 multi-jet taxi in for a new one.

I like the look of the new 1.6 16 valve multi-jet.. If the mpg is correct it will pay for itself. ;)

However I'm very worried it might be a Peugeot / Citroen group engine if the 1.6HDI type..

Everyone I know (in the Taxi business) who has one has had so much trouble with them starting at 48K miles when the clutch and dual mass flywheel give out!

At 100k or before first the Turbo will give out twice in less than 1k miles no matter what is done.. followed by the engine usually big time.. piston out the side type bang.

Anyone know if the new engine in the Fiat is of Peugeot / Citroen stable?

Fiat builts its own Multijet engines since ever - nothing to do with those french HDI engine - which are build in cooperation with Ford.

The HDI got 1560ccm, the Multijet 1596ccm.

But you will find the HDI engines in Fiat Sudo, Fiat Ulysse and Lancia Zetra / Phedra badged as JTD !

Yes I remember a Mechanic from Ford telling me that the same engine is used in some of there cars.. :(
Thanks for the info :)

I have driven several of the Ford versions of the Peugeot/Citroen engine and its a peach of an engine (in a Ford). I seemed to average 58mpg with the last one drove. Don't know about reliability though.

Recently bought a Saab 9-3 1.9tid which has a fiat engine, great torque, super economy, except its all for nothing when you have to replace the dmf and clutch at 70k for £1200. Automatic next time for me, or petrol.

Told by a Taxi Co mechanic he never has problems with Fiat DMF they have about 20 of the people carriers\ wheel chair adapted, now when you mention Skoda DMF:cry:

As far as Fiat Diesel Engines go then older 1.9 (8V and 16V) units are brilliant. MPG/economy drops off badly with the later DPF models. i gather the newer 1.6 mulijet engines are still totally Fiat and provided better low end peak torque at 1500rpm and a better fuel efficiency with lower CO. However the BHP is lower. Higher torque, lower BHP, different gearing etc. means that I guess Fiat have done their designs correctly and (except at the extreme ends of performance envelope) the 1.6 and 1.9 engines basically deliver the same broadband performance.

Regarding DFM / Clutch / Gearbox problems then one has to check more carefully and not always blame Fiat.

Some of the more modern Fiats use General Motors gearboxes (6 speed), drive shafts and basic suspension parts.

I have a Croma 2005 and have had clutch, driveshaft, suspension and spring failures. These are GM parts. The gearbox thus far is OK at 49K miles but has been noisy/"clacky" (like a sloppy CV joint sound) since new.

I'm not certain but I think the gearbox in the Doblo is a 6 speed GM unit. As for the rest of the drive train and suspension I have no idea.

Fiat and Alfa Romeo are collaborating with GM so the engines in new Doblo's could be GM sourced.

With regard to later Doblo's (Multijet) the DPF problem can be cured very easily and improve on the original performance. Contact Motormech Birmingham (Famous on FCCUK site) or Longlife Exhaust Systems.

The information about SAAB 1.9TD being a Fiat unit is very interesting.. I wonder what Engine ECU they use because if I remember right SAAB get between 150 and 185BHP out of their 1,9TD...

If its the same unit as we use then...

Possibly time for an ECU swap??

:)

mmm my first response was Boooo spoil sports. ;) then I read the article..
16 valve 150 bhp.. with another version running at 120bhp..and 315 nm torque..

It all sounds dam close to me.. I will ask on the Saab Forum if anyone knows which ECU its running.. you never know.. it might be close enough.

The 1.9 in the fiat, alfa, saab vauxhall, opel and holden is excellent drove both the old vectra insignia and alfa guilietta with them.

On all of them they give excellent MPG but like the alfa with its three mode driving switch .

Sharing of engines has been a saab isuzu vauxhall GM thing for many years the old 2.2 TID in saab was same as 2.0 used in vectra.

As for DMF the prices on all are really expensive we found a company that could reface and provide normal clutch for the old 2.8 (isuzu powered) frontera.

The cost of flywheel was £1005 plus vat so hence alternative fix

if you look round at some of the tuning goodies for vauxhall 1.9 and 1.3 engines you can find a few lightened flywheels that are not dual mass
Also the EGR blanking that fits the 1.3 cdti ( multijet)
