2002 1.9d has been in and out the garage, new fuel pump, erg valve and crank sensor and now 2nd hand ECU coded to vehicle....the problem lies driving along between 2000 & 3000 rpm I get an intermittent problem where it "splutters" feels like a miss-fire or something but it then goes again......glow plug light also flashes after start-up

Should also say it's even worse from cold but doesn't go when warm, garage was saying it was an ECU fault so I replaced but still same fault......

glow plug light is most probably faulty glow plugs of poor connections to the glow plugs. the engine fault i would need to look at/ run through examiner

1st - Probably drawing air into the diesel fuel system. Put a length of 6mm clear plastic pipe between the outlet of the diesel fuel filter to the inlet of the injector pump and watch for the tell tale bubbles. The 1.9D diesel injector pump has to draw the fuel from the tank as there is no in-tank fuel pump and it really tests the integrity of the fuel lines and by the way, the Fiat fuel filter is prone to leaking air from the return valve. It is hoped that any garage would do this simple check before screwing you for replacement parts that were perfectly fine.
2nd - Blank off the EGR valve on the outlet side with a stainless shim. I did this with mine, it transformed the vehicle and actually reduced the amount of visible exhaust emissions.

The garage dealt with the fuel pump but reckoned it came off a doblo fitted then crashed few weeks later. I won't ever be taking it back to him again as I think he's not interested if he can't fix it quick. I will try the filter test asap and I'm not sure how to do the egr but will ask around
