timing belt broke on my doblo 1.9jtd 04plate. was doing about 45 mph shoved clutch in as soon as i heard the thud. likely damage cost to repair?
somewhere I heard that as the valves run straight up and down they often don't get bent. and that I could get away with just changing the timing belt.

Unlikely you'll get away with it, doesnt matter how quick you were with the clutch. Best you can hope for is a top end re-build, new cambelt, waterpump & tensioner kit, gasket set, coolant, oil, filters... it really is a bit of a disaster... was the cambelt 6 years old? You'll know once the head is off, fingers crossed that the pistons are OK & there has been no other damage...

hmm looks like I'm going to be riding my ktm adventure through the winter then:slayer:

I hope your bill isn't too bad for the work needed, I had this happen a few years ago and it was a new engine job....

I've just bought an 06 plate 1.9 Family and was wondering about the timing belt and when it should be changed?

Mine hasn't been changed thus far and was wondering if it would be a good pre-emptive move given the car is nearly 5 years old?

many thanks,
Ewan

Belt should be changed every 4 years regardless of mileages, I had mine done at 53,000 miles & 2 years old just to be on the safe side, only cost £185 all in, including a waterpump, tensioners (Gates kit) & new coolant. Incidentally, with the Gates kit, for an extra £10 (which I paid) Gates will cover replacement of any faulty part they supply, or poor workmanship, (with an accompanying VAT number for the garage that fitted it), and any subsequent damage to the engine, for the whole period of the next belt kit replacement period.... Great value & peace of mind, & FAR cheaper than waiting for a breakage. (y)

If the belt snapped then it might not have done as much damage as you think. I had a belt slip a couple of teeth - so it kept spinning the cam

Every crown showed indentations of valve heads, every stem was bent & jammed in place.
