Hi

Doblo registered June 2002 - 1.9 JTD - 80K

I'm having problems selecting gears (any gear) while driving - gear selection OK when engine is off.

I have to force the gears in each time, sometimes with a crunching other times they just go in but it's hard to get them in most of the time.

I was quoted £448 for a clutch supplied and fitted but i'm going to mr.clutch this afternoon to get a proper diagnosis and see about getting it done one day next week - can't be certain it is the clutch just now

Do any of you know where I can get this done without breaking the bank? - is £448 about right price. I'm told this model will need a dual mass (whatever that is )

Anyway I'll go and see what nice Mr. clutch is going to say and see what you guys have come up in the meantime

Thanks in advance

Andy

I just got back from mr. clutch - he is sure that there is a gearbox problem (lots of noise coming from under the bonnet when engaging the clutch) and is 99.9 % certain it will require a dual mass flywheel as well as a clutch which would take the price from £399 inc vat for a fitted clutch - to around £700-£800 if flywheel is replaced as well

He said it is often the case the dual mass flywheel is servicable but if not it will need to be replaced - I might just replace the clutch and keep my fingers crossed on the rest...

I've had a ring round and found a local garage who's quoted me £245 for a clutch fitted and i'm waiting for a quote on the dual mass - I'm a little warey about using a garage i've not had any dealings with but he seems ok and is a member of that Good Garage Scheme if thats anything to go off - 97% good review over a hundred or so customers

Do you think i should avoid cost-cutting and go with mr. clutch or give my local garage a shot - don't know which way to go so your input would be so appreciated

anyone know someone nr Manchester who's cheap and cheerful / reliable??:)

Andy

Hi.
Although I don't have a diesel Doblo, I am very wary about fast fitting clutch outlets.
I have been told that dual mass flywheel vehicles can be fitted with a standard flywheel and clutch, although there can be a slight increase in vibration when using the clutch.
I would be inclined to use a good garage preferably with word of mouth recommendation, or do it yourself.

I think those prices are very high and you should shop around first.

thanks trev

i have done some shopping around and apart from one (dubious) garage, mr. clutch has quoted me the cheapest - but i will have another look around tomorrow...

Nationwide autocentre, 3 local garages have all said the labour is 6-7 hours and this marks the price up drastically

as far as doing it myself i wouldn't know where to begin (maybe i should look on utube for a step-by-step guide:rolleyes:)

- I have no experience with mechanics and even though not afraid of a challenge i might have to spill my wallet this time :(

unless you are offering, of course :D

by the way you said a conventional flywheel could be put in place of the dual mass one, I heard you needed a conversion kit for that - are they hard to get hold of, would this be significantly cheaper? what is a conversion kit?

cheers
Andy

Hi Andy.
I have no idea about the conversion kit (my Doblo is petrol) but perhaps the more knowledgeable here could help you.
I do know of one taxi man who has a "normal" clutch and flywheel and he swears by it!
