Hey

I am hoping you experts here will be able to help me with a "not so little" problem.

I have a 2007 Doblo 1.3 MultiJet Diesel which about 2 months ago konked out on a motorway from cruising speed. It literally went from 70 to zip and had to be towed off the road. It will not start but the engine sounds like it is turning.

It has been looked at by three mechanics and all of their suggestions as to why it happened and what is not wrong have proven incorrect.

I have been advised that the timing chain had snapped but further investigation proved that this is not the case. I was also advised that a cylinder or all cylinders could be seized but once again another mechanic has managed to turn the engine over manually.

I believe my mechanic is completely stuck as he really can see nothing wrong anywhere and continual searches online and discussions with other mechanics have not pointed us in the direction of an answer.

Has anyone ever heard of such a complete and utter engine failure on this model or has anyone any ideas as to what could have caused this or what may now be wrong.

Please let me know any other information I could provide you with to hopefully save my "near-dead" Doblo.

Unfortunately its a commercial vehicle so the warranty from Fiat was only 2 years. It has been to our local Fiat garage however anyway - and theirs was the the snapped timing belt suggestion! However, my current mechanic says the timing belt is not broken as he can see it turn.

I believe my current mechanics current thought is that there may be a hole in a piston but i was hoping for an easier answer than him having to take the head off to check - plus if this is the issue I just ll need a new engine anyway i think!

Hi,

Have they checked the timing and checked the timing chain properly? I know you say that your mechanic says its ok because he can see it turning, but the chain can slip, thus throwing the timing out.

Its highly unlikely to be a seized cylinder if its turning over ok.

Do you have any warning light on the dash? Fault codes?

Alan

chain might be ok but what about tensioner/pump? I'd be looking here before removing head etc

Take the rocker cover off and make sure the cam shaft hasn't snapped,
Or the timing chain might of jumped a tooth and bent the valves get them to check the actual timing, the engine and chain would still turn if it's jumped a tooth or two.
Also do a compression test that will tell a lot about whats gone on. :(

this may sound absurd, indeed i thought the same, but i have experienced the same problem. Believe it or not it was finally diagnosed as a failed turbo. my usual garage had the vehicle sent to a diesel specialist after having had it nearly two weeks. But beware after having had a new turbo fitted it only lasted about a month.this was replaced under warranty about 4 months ago and low and behold it is now waiting for a third turbo. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE AND THERE ARE PROCEDURES WHICH MUST BE ADHERED TO WHEN CHANGING THE TURBO. APPARENTLY THESE INCLUDE A CHANGE OF SUMP AND SEVERAL OIL FLUSH/CHANGES.
Best of luck

I disagree as the 1.3MJ engine has been around for years, fitted to loads of models, used by other manufacturers and is well proven (worth changing chain tensioners of high mileage vehicles) and a popular choice.

When changing a turbo it is common sense you check or change feed pipe and renew any in line filters, this applies to all turbos and not just Fiat sourced ones. I have never heard of a sump being changed at same time as turbo:confused:

If your turbo is needed changed for a 3rd time after 4 months then I suggest you look for the cause elsewhere!

Indeed. Perhaps a blockage preventing oil from flowing effectively?

Can anyone help, broke down the other day in my Fiat Doblo 1.3 multijet, the RAC towed me home, plugged in their computer into my vehicle and came up cam sensor faulty. I replaced with new one and problem was sorted but its very difficult to start now, takes about 10 cranks to start. What can this be? Please help.

Thank you.
