Hi All

My Doblo is going to be a camper (eventually!) - and I'm wondering whether or not it is worth insulating. I have windows all round which makes me hesitate - wouldn't the heat easily escape through them?

There's a nice gap between the roof panel and roof so not a difficult job.

Is it worth insulating?

Thoughts appreciated and any ideas regarding insulation tips,

Thanks In Advance

Insulation only works if there is a temperature differential in the first place, so what source of heat would your dobby camper have? To heat effectively you would need a mains electricity connection or some form of gas heater. My experiences in a camper van in New Zealand in their winter is you need a very good sleepingbag and any heat you put into it escapes fairly rapidly. If you do insultate it the silver bubble wrap rolls on sale in diy stores is probably the easiest to do and thinnest. Probably the best place to put it is in the floor of the sleeping area.

What a great idea - a Doblo camper! There is one firm - Danbury Motorcaravans - which converts Doblos to campers but has the eff-rontery to charge about £20K for the finished product! You should be able to make a camper for much less. I say GO!

Yes, insulate the whole vehicle. You can have insulated screens made for the glass by Van Comfort - http://www.vancomfort.co.uk/ Cost about £200 ?

B and Q carpet underlay can be stuck on to insulate. You will need a proper heater. Don't skimp on this as you will gas yourself.A Propex heater costs about £400.

If you do a good proper job, you should recoup your costs when you sell to a fisherman or climber.Good luck !

Hi, I used a night heater from an artic cab to heat a van i had. Any good lorry scrap yard should have one to hand, if you connect it to a leisure battery it should keep your Doblo warm all night. Wire the leisure battery to charge when you are driving and you should have no problems keeping warm. Another tip i found useful was buying a king size quilt as you can fold it in half and offers you extra comfort aswell. Hope this helps.

Hi, A cheap way to insulate the roof area would be to ply-line the roof and fill the gap with rockwool insulation and then cover the ply with silver bubble wrap. With the ply you can always attach a little light to the ceiling to give you a good night light.

Hi,I have converted a 1.9jtd hightop to a camper and have used it through the year for trips, with no need for insulation to save condensation. It just gets cold.I just use a very good sleeping bag and when its really cold use two bags and open the door slightly when cooking.I'ts been down to -18deg c in France while on a skiing trip and we arrived to early to get into the Gite.I'm in the process of fitting a night heater at the moment so we'll see what happens then.It would be good to see your ideas and the finished article.Cheers Colin
