right i have got a 1.9 jtd family 2006 plate and i need to put some engine oil in .. im a complete and total novice so i dont know what type of oil to buy can someone please give us some help ..

cheers paul(y)

paul what oil is in there at the moment, is it a 10w 40 semi or 5w 40 full synthetic.

the later is without question the best if doing a full oil change but if your topping up and don't know. put in the cheaper stuff untill next service.

Ask the garage that sold you the engine what they put in it. I assume they did replace the oil as a precaution?

What sort of price is the Fiat Selenia stuff?

Also, what's best for the 1.3 M-jet?

used Selenia at my 24000 mile service 5w 40 full synthetic cost for the 5lites
is £32.73 + vat and delivery so not cheap. from Shop4parts

I bought all my service items oil, fuel ,cabin and air filters + 5l of oil so saved a small amount on fiat main dealer prices.

Got my good local independant to service with these parts.

Far superior oil to the 10w 40 semi castrol something that my fiat dealer was going to use and doesn't the engine know it.

best oil always never skimp a small price to pay now saves thousands later(y)

Every since we first put Mrs_G's Cargo in the care of our local independant garage (more than 200,000 miles ago) it has been running on Valvoline Maxlife engine oil. One of the ingredients is a seal conditioner that helps guard against leaks. A small 'weep' that was evident when we first started using the independant garage soon dried up after using Valvoline oil.

It isn't cheap compared to some but still peanuts compared to a new engine.

The oil change guide on this forum states a sump plug tool under required tools. Is the sump plug some sort of funny bolt and where can I get this tool.

Also, does everybody use Fiat oil filters or buy them elsewhere, if so at what cost?

my 05 1.9 jtd has a sump bolt with a allen key fitting in the bottom so a good set of allen keys and assuming yours is the same fitment!? you will be good!!, a hammer to tap the allen key is always good can be tight to undo!

as for filters i always use unipart filters good quality and easily available, fuel filter about a 6quid and the diesel filter about a tenner if i remember rightly?? air filters can be expensive unless u haggle the discount to a sensible level and they do a very good 5w 40 oil for about 18 quid too :D

Went to Costco earlier and they don't stock Edge anymore, just magnatec.

The did have Mobil1 0W40 though, any experiences with this oil?

Runs great with my 1.9 JTD...
Sure one of the best oil on the market.

All our family's cars run with the Mobil 1 0W-40:
BMW Z4 (192 HP)
BMW 325i (218 HP)
Mazda 2
Mazda Premacy
and very soon: 13 years old VW Polo (33 HP) :)

Hi,
Bit of a thread resurrection!

No that oil is NOT suitable for your engine. It needs a 5W-40 (or possibly 10W40 which was quoted in earlier documents) and you have 5W-30.
I'd use semi-synthetic oil.
