Another fault! hehe

In the last few days my 51 plate JTD Diesel has decided not to start when warm. The starter turns over at normal speed but the lump won't fire. It will bump off when warm (i know i shouldn't but when you gotta get going, you gotta get going) and the water level is fine, so the head gasket/stat etc... are fine.

Any ideas? It has been suggested that the starter motor might be past it's best but why would it turn at normal speed and work more or less fine when cold??

Any input appreciated as i need to rectify the problem sharpish... i don't even dare fuel up incase it won't fire again!!

Cheers

When was the last service? Thinking blocked fuel filter but that wouldnt allow a cold start either. How many miles on the clock? May be worth running some injector cleaner through the system or even taking them out for a clean?Probably worth also checking the various sensors and the EGR for functionality.

Bit odd really, its usually "wont start from cold" with diesels and dodgy compression or heaters.

Thanks for that, i suspected filter too but all but ruled it out for the same reason you stated. That said i'm gonna get another one today.

Last service... not sure, about 6K miles ago i think, it was just completed by last owner as i bought it.

For some reason the fault is intermittent. For example i just nipped out, got the engine to full temperature and when i got back i turned it off and then decided to see what happened... and it fired straight back up!

Another puzzler... it started to be a bit of a pig to start on damp mornings last week but it would start after 2 or 3 tries, whereas when hot and it decides it doesn't want to know no amount of cranking will fire it up.

Gonna try cleaning the injectors too, see how that goes! Thanks for the input.

Right the van seems to be fixed finally, albeit at the astronomical cost of nearly £400.

Seems a slight weep on the rocker cover gasket had slowly been blathering a load of sensors just below with oil which caused their failure. Also 2 of the 4 glowies were apparantly 'ineffective'. A combination of the temp sensor reading a temperature of -256 degrees and the crank sensor not being able to tell it's head from it's arse were the main problems it seems.

New Temp sensor
4 Glow plugs
Crank Sensor
Fuel Filter
Rocker Cover Gasket

I am seriously considdering sacking 4 wheeled vehicles and going back to motorcycles as my primary form of transport
