Hi,

Long time lurker first time poster.

I have over filled my Doblo's engine oil and looks like I have blown my engine.:nutter:

I was wondering what your thoughts were on the course of action I could take.

Its on an 04 plate with about 20,000 miles on the clock.

Not sure if I should try and get a recon engine or have the one in it rebuilt.

Its only just happened in the last hour or so just got home from being towed back by the RAC and this has been my first port of call.

Anyways your thoughts would be much appreciated and I can imagine what some will be,:slayer: I know I fully deserve them.

Regards,
Pete

Tough luck Pete :(
I guess the well versed on here can explain what has happened to it if it is an oil over-fill? Burst seals, crank-case compression? What does it do?

I get neurotic about over filling my 1.9 Mjet or letting it run low, but it seems to use very little oil to be fair and I check it every few days, over 17k miles done now.

A self re-build would definitely be an education if it is possible for you.

Hi Ffoxy,

Thanks for your centiments.

These were all the things that the very nice RAC man said but said to find out exactly would need to be stripped down and inspected.

He tried to turn it over and it did but it was very sluggish.

He also explained what probaly happened. I wasnt with my wife who was driving at the time but she had to pull over suddenly and jump out because of all the smoke. She pulled out the keys but it kept on running for about 2 mins at full RPM and then just died. He did explain why it carry on running at full RPM.

I wouldnt really have the time to take this on myself was only trying to top up the fluids for the start back to work next week.

Funny thing was if I had gone back to site early I would not have had idal hands ;-)

Regards,
Pete

Dammit... I can imagine oil getting into the cylinders and the compression effect of that. Then unburnt oil lousing up the various sensors and kidding the ECU into doing unspeakable things....

Any chance you might find a 1.3 unit from a scrappies? Straight swap sounds the best bet if you can find a known good un?

Just a thought but try draining som of the oil and restarting it happened once on my das diesel, it started revving and would not switch off and you could not see a thing for the smoke but when it did eventually switch off the oil was drained and filled to the correct level with new oil and it never gave trouble again could be worth a try?

That sounds encouraging and AA / RAC men have been wrong before....

The reason the engine revs up on its own even of you turn it off is that it is running on the engine oil because there is too much of it and it was getting into the cylinders somehow.

We have had this before with turbo diesels although for a different reason- the turbo seals go and it gets to a point when they have gone so much oil gets into the cylinders through the inlet then it ignites and the engine reves up. The faster it revs up the more oil pressure so the more is sprayed into the engine. Eventually it will stop when all the oil has gone but then it may have already done damage to the internals due to lack of oil.

My advice would be to get the engine stripped and inspected but I would say that it may have partially siezed and the crank, shells ect will prob require looking at.

Also it has more than likely blown the head gasket due to the massive pressure in the cylinders from being filled with oil.

Where abouts are you? I run a workshop working mainly on Fiat and we would be happy to take a look at it for you.

Cheers Rich.

:eek:that's pretty scary:eek:

How do you know how much oil to put in?? My husband did all that, and now I'm alone, having to learn everything!
I can check the level, which is usually fine, but if it's low, I wouldn't have the foggiest how much to put in.

Top up slowly, in small quantities, check every time you add some oil Lyn, give the oil time to settle into the sump before each check too. Be very careful, if you think you added too much dont start the engine, oil is very easily drained from the sump if it is checked before starting the engine and found to be over the Maximum mark.

Thanks for that Ffoxy. Sensible advice.
Much appreciated.
I feel really stupid not knowing such simple stuff. How dare my husband go and die on me!!

Hi Every one,

Thanks for all your thoughts.

I don't think draining the oil will make any difference we did have a few hours use out of the van while it was overfilled and it was turning over fine on each occasion we tried it until odviously we had the big bang. When the RAC man tried it and it was really sluggish.

The man from the RAC said what richcinq has said on this thread. Dont under estimate how much of a fool I have been probably put 500mL+ into the engine whether it needed it or not:eek:

There was coolant on the floor not sure where exactly this came out from. And bear in mind that the engine ran on at maximum RPM for at least 2+ mins.

Anyways still trying to figure out the way to go most garages are saying get a second hand engine and have that fitted. But really not liking this idea has of not knowing the history of the engine. Its hard getting any sort of figures out of any one as well for the supply and fit of a second hand motor.

Not sure if an engine rebuild would be the way to go with the sort of damage that I think may of happened it may be to costly.

I have only been searching the net but cant find any on line recon engine suppliers

Thanks for the replies anyway and I will see what the week unfolds for me.

Regards,
Pete
