Has anyone ever had/seen an awning/tent type thingy that you attach to your tailgate?
I'm sure I saw something a while back, but as we had a campervan at the time, didn't take much notice.

Have seen tents on ebay that attach to the back of your van , think it was a ebay shop that sold roof tents for land rovers that sort of thing

Interesting. There must be some secondhand ones out there.

Not cheap either.

I love camping and I want to have a bed in the Doblo, and rest of the stuff, including my dogs :D in the tent/awning thingy. I want to find something by next spring/summer so I can still camp with my vw friends. I may have to put a vw badge over my fiat badge though ;)

Do you mean something like this... ?
It's an 'Aztec'.

It erects as a large dome tent with fiberglass poles. It does attract attention when you come back to your pitch, unzip the large 'garage door' then reverse in.

I use it with the rear seats completely removed, with a small board extension it makes a total waterproof double bed, the tent itself is a large living area.

Do I also need to say that it makes a fantastic mobile garage to work in: with the car driven right in front first? Friend borrowed it during our 'lovely' wet summer to do some serious engine work on his car, which took a few days, in his driveway.

Now that's the sort of thing I am thinking of. (y)
Can you put it up single handed though?

I know this has been discussed before, but how easy is it to remove the seats?

Do you have some form of curtains when you camp?

I really miss the campervan, but now I am on my own, I can't afford to run 2 vehicles. :( so I need to find ways of camping in my lovely Doblo.

Not sure, depends on size, but if you got a frame tent you could possibly reverse car into doorway making the tent sort of like a awning.
Many frame tents have 2 doors.
A lot cheaper i would think, plus you could leave tent erect while going out in car.
Could you do that with a awning?

Possiblities!(y)

Sorry for the delay replying.

Putting it up single handed?
It can be done, though it is fiddly. My partner has MS so I normally do the lot myself, - every site I've been on has always had someone offer to support the middle when it's 'going up'. Once it's up the pegging etc is done by me.

Seats?
First time we went I had the seats folded - and spent every night worrying about raising my head and impaling it on the clamps and metal work!
Taking the seats out is really easy the single seat & the double seat are each attached simply to the car with 2 Allen bolts each, through a hinged, black, metal bracket. The important thing is not to whack the bodywork as you remove them from the car!

Curtains?
I use three cheap fleece blankets - what ever you want really. One has the top of its corners tucked between the ceiling and the large plastic cover where the top sliding door bracket 'parks' when the door is closed. The other two are done in a similar fashion down each side, covering the sliding door & rear side windows.
To keep out insects at night a fine net-like curtain (£1.99 in IKEA?) is put across the rear opening.

Having been flooded out while camping in the past sleeping in the car like this is much more reassuring, especially with our weather!

I bought mine almost exactly two years ago - at that time of year it was cheap, I think it was about £170, it's been well used. This one came with an inner tent which can be put inside and fills a third of the tent, to one side - ideal to put a couple of kids in.
