I have a Fiat Doblo Crago van and my fuel indicator on the dashboard is showing it full up. It occasionally moves back to its correct position then goes back to full again.

Anyone know what is causing the problem and where the sensor is situated in relation to the fuel tank?

The fuel indicator readout has always been poor, see all posts in other sections (cento, punto etc) where similar threads have been posted. Its a fiat trait, no real cure, get used to it :)

Thanks, but how do I fix it?

I never know how much diesel is in the tank.:(

There isnt a fix as such, you have to live with it. Its is a fiat trait.

Reset your trip after every fill up if unsure on how much is left

Apple funny you should mention this because this is the one section this hasn't really been mentioned before and it's not something I'm aware that Doblo'ers live with.

Anyone else had this problem then?

Could be the sender unit, could be the gauge?

But as far as I'm aware it shouldn't be like it - and not one of the things you have to live with :) out of interest what year is the Doblo?

You need to take to a dealer to get the wiring checked, it may be a pump unit or body computer or guage. Examiner is the only fault code reader to be able to communicate with cluster, body computer and engine ecu to confirm where fault may lie.

Really very little to go wrong.
I've had a couple of cars where I've had to replace the sender - one accessed by lifting the carpet under the rear seat to reveal a panel, another I had to drop the tank. I've also had cars where the sender went into the side of the tank.
I've also had a couple of cars where the unit's earth terminal had simply corroded & needed replacing.
Leaves me wondering if we'd be better off using flow meters?

My Doblo Cargo is a 2001.
I use it for my business and cover a lot of miles so I can't just accept the fact that the fuel gauge is stuck on high. I really need to get it sorted, but don't want to be ripped off if its something I can sort myself.

Perhaps a diagnosis with a dealer or independent specialist will help you fix it yourself. At least you'll know what the problem is! Other than that you could replace the gauge (doubt it's that though cause it's moving) or doing the sender unit.

The sender (or level gauge) unit is incorporated within the fuel pump (as far as I can see from my diagram). This can be accessed by lifting up the floor covering in the van to gain access to the fuel pump protective cover (a small metal plate with three bolts/screws in it).

This will reveal the fuel pump, return and supply pipes, and all the wiring. The sender has it's own wiring connector on the 1.9D models according to my workshop manual. Check all connections, but unless it can be repaired that's an expensive sender unit!

Thanks or all then advice.

Apart from the possibility of paying for a new sender unit I will have to remove everything I have built into the van to get the floor up.(n)

Any idea the price of a sender unit?

If you take it a dealer they will be able to locate the general area of the problem using examiner without removing anything.
