This is a weird problem i got. Had the cylinder Head Re Skimmed and pressure tested ,new gasket, new thermostat, about 5 weeks ago. doesnt overheat anymore but after driving and reaching normal temp, Coolant is frothing out of the expansion cap,but still doesnt overheat and radiator and heater inside and all hoses are v hot,so could it be an airlock or is the head gasket failing ?Ive also noticed when it bubbles out the coolant level is higher in the reservoir but when you switch off it drops down to were it was when cold.Would a compression test be worth doing?

Hi
Which engine do you have please? My old 1.9 non turbo diesel had the same problem (as many of these engines do).....
Hello its the same engine a 1.9D
non turbo. hope you can help cheers

Your symptoms sound the same as mine and on the same engine which points to a head / head gasket failure. In my case pressure escaped into the water chamber and put the whole cooling system under pressure to the extent that coolant blew out through every connection under massive pressure. The hoses fet like baloons about to burst!
The Fiat garage would not try to repair same - their only way of completing the repair was to replace the head with a Fiat recon unit.(n) They had previously attempted repairs on other engines as your garage did and still failed to cure it.
I got rid of mine back to the dealer and had my money back.
Hope that helps.:)

Well not as simple as that bought this from an auction the pressure is no were near as bad as that. The cylinder heads been pressure tested too which was fine so it cud be the gasket or radiator . If the head was faulty i think it wud be a lot worse than it is. The radiator hasnt been changed and that radweld hasnt done any favours. Ill see how it goes and LYKHIGO(Let You Know How I Get On) cheers.

Thanks for the update - I forgot to mention that the pressure testing was done by the garages - no fault - and after they had put it back together again 1 engine leaked after crossing the yard and the 2nd did a bit longer. Thereafter their policy was to put a Fiat recon head on everytime.

You could also try loosening the rad cap to the point where the fluid does not leak but any build up blows out to see if there is any affect.

Keep in touch.

Ive located the fault there is air getting into the cooling system off either compression through the head or through the block this is causing the exsessive pressure build up which is stopping circulation and causes the water to get pushed out of the expansion tank weve done a work around its not a cure but i can drive the van . weve removed the thermostat spring and barrel from inside, now the coolant can circulate weve also left the cap loose and pressure doesnt build up and it doesnt get really hot . there must be a slight hole or crack somewere that is letting air escape into the cooling system. Ive ordered some new repair kit called "SteelSeal" from the usa it locates any holes or cracks via heat and uses a chemical reaction to seal it doesnt use particles which can clog up radiators etc shud be here in next few days ill keep you posted( the crack or hole cud be anywere) so this is the cheapest and easiest solution hope it works . There is no leaks anywere e.g oil getting into water etc.and the van drives perfectly no loss of compression or power etc( must be a very tiny hole or crack)
