Electric Windows System Failure

On Saturday morning, being a sunny day I unlocked my Croma and opened the windows at the same time ( Holding unlocking button down for 2 secs ) and all 4 windows came down. Got in and could not start engine as battery indictor showing fault. Put a multimeter across battery and only had 9 volts.

After a trip the Motor Factors to buy a Battery ( Varta at £96 with 3 year gaurantee ) Listed under Opel/ Vauxhall Signum, as Fiat Croma not in book. Changed battery, bloody hell they are big!! thought I had bought the wrong one.

Once changed, put key in ignition, and the amber triangle with exclamation mark came on with 4 messages saying window safety system failure on each window. Windows close fine and open fine, but the anti pinch system does not on each window as I tested this with a long carrot instead of my index finger.

I have checked all the fuses..all ok. Is this systen failure just because the windows were down and open when battery changed or is this an examiner job or what else can I check???

Re: Electric Windows System Failure

Because the battery was removed the windows have lost their "fully up" and "fully down" settings.

All you have to do is- start the engine (to ensure the batt voltage doesn't drop too low), then press and hold any window button in the 'down' position and keep it pressed even when the window reaches the bottom for at least a couple of seconds. Now bring it all the way up, keeping the button pressed for 2-3 secs after it stops. Repeat for the other windows and the warning should go out.

Re: Electric Windows System Failure

All explained in the Owners Manual :-)

RTFM as they say in the trade.

In case you think I'm perfect, pulling your leg etc. etc. then no way. Every time I read my Croma Owner's Manual I learn a little bit more. Often one has to piece disparate bits of information to get the full factos/info.

This is all actually very interesting. As we introduce more technology into every day items/appliances/vechicles we now have to explain to everybody what and how out technology may impact or effect their appliance/vehicle and wht they need to do as a potentially clueless individual what to do about it.

If we just said in the manual/dash "Return to Dealer ASAP" then those more savy would be really pi**ed off at being treated as clueless cusotmers and would quite rightly be offended. Couple this with a family holiday journey etc etc then matters get worse.

I face the same sort of problems with all household appliances. Just 5 minutes ago the boss ask how do/does one set this DVD/HDD recorder to record a particular program. Yes it is different to the DVD recorder, PVR record, VHS record......etc. No standard.

Same for cars. No standard. OBD, EOBD, EOBD II has provided a standard for agencies and dealers but is beyond reach for most. At a user level end user data, how it is displayed and communicated, and what ones has to do, varies by make and in some cases varies by models within a make.

RTFM is the only starting point one has in the absence of any other overiding data.

Re: Electric Windows System Failure

My owners manual must be first edition, cos there is no mention what to do. It just says contact Fiat Dealership.
