Hi,

I am due to pick up a nearly new Fiat Croma 1.9 8v this week, and I have been reading up about the car. I notice that several owners have mentioned that the car mists up regularly - also mentioned in Autocar mag last week. I noticed the same in a car I test drove. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

I've had mine 9 months now and not had this problem. OK for me so far.

Hi SWebb,

I now have the Croma, and it doesn't mist up, which is goodnews. However, it does have a couple of niggling problems that means it will need to go in to the dealer. Just wondered if anyone has come across these:

- Can only open the tailgate with the remote. The handle never works
- Tailgate opens with the remote only sometimes. Usually if I lock and unlock the car with the remote, I can then open the tailgate with the remote. Maybe needs a software update?
- Error message on the dash LCD comes on every time I start up, and the yellow triangle on the dash is always on - the error is that the rear window security is unavailable. I looked it up in the manual, and it says that the antipinch function is not working. The windows work fine. Anyone know what to do to reset this, or is this a dealer only reset/repair? I seem to remember on a previous Vauxhall that you could reset the antipinch function with some combination of winding the window down and up. Can't remember the detail...

Most annoying is a rattle from the boot somewhere - it might be the retractable parcel shelf or something in the tailgate itself. The car is otherwise so quiet that it's quite distracting.

Hi there

We've had our new to us Croma for just over six months now. Not long after we got it we too had a problem with the boot release. Although there is a necessary software update for the boot release we also had a fault with the boot microswitch which needed replacing. A whole new boot release handle section was needed as its all built in, which then needed spraying to match... All under the warrenty though.

Other problems- we needed the clutch microswitch for the security system changed as it was only working intermittently and so sometimes it couldn't start, another warrenty matter and our local dealer Motor Services in Chepstow have been very helpful even though we didn't get the car from them

Other than that its a great car with the 16v diesel, love the big sunroof and all the extras we got on top, but we've only seen another three on the road!

For benefit of all croma owners, there is a recall on recirculation motors & software update. There is 2 other software updates & the security/anti pinch function needs programmed.
Please be aware there a quite a few recalls(9) on the croma so I would advise all owners to contact garage to check all have been carried out.

Hi T14086,

Is there a way of telling which recalls have been done, or does the dealer have to check this via the diagnostics? Also, is there a list of recalls publically available?

Just ask at your dealer who will print off a SIGI sheet showing any recalls,or just give them a phone, have your chassis number handy ;)

I've posted this question about misting up on the Forum & also in Auto Express. It's been to the dealer a couple of times and they've not really sorted it, though they've cleaned out the channels in the sunroof which may have helped - but then again we've had dry weather recently! I didn't know about the recalls though, so that's worth chasing up.

To be fair, I can't remember anyone else on the Forum say they have the same problem, so it might just be me?

There is a Fiat Service Bulletin for this problem. The is an air recirculation vent flap modification that has to be done.

Thanks very much Nick, I'll ask my local dealer about this.
Cheers MIM

Hi SWebb,

Just to let you know, having taken the car to the local Fiat dealer to investigate the issues, the rattle was the boot lock, which needs replacing (seems to be a common problem, as I read an Owner's review on parkers.co.uk with the same problem). The part also needs painting, as it includes the plastic on the outside of the car where the button to open the boot sits. The window error was reset without further work, and so far seems OK. It started the day I bought the car, and the dealer suggested it could be because they had to jump start the car. Apparently they've seen similar before. They also told me that the AA and RAC now use special leads to jump start that do not exceed the 12v, which they think would have been the cause. Tailgate only opening intermittently was fixed with a software update - thanks for alerting me to that possibility, as I mentioned it when it went in.
Fortunately still no sign of misting up (to return to my original post).
