Engine management light came on and then a red flashing like with a message Check Transmission. Struggled to make the mile home. Clunking in gearbox, esp when trying to get reverse. Identified as fault P1714 - Induction Solenoid valve malfunction. Detailed "engine torque (from can) intermittent"

What and where is this solenoid? Any tips, advice, information will be very, very welcome.

Hi,
What did you read the code with? If it's a generic reader the discription may be inaccurate. I think it refers to one of the gear box hydraulic valves not an engine valve. Another description is
Signal inductive sensor selection solenoid A
I take it youhave checked the fluid level and colour?
If you have access to multiecuscan you an check the valve solenoid voltage, current and feedback current.
I don't have an auto so can't offer much advice. Suggest you search on here.

For the benefit of others. Discovered engine not firing properly in Cylinder 2. Cleaned connection. Ok for a while. Then not firing right in cylinder 3. Cleaned all electrical connect but to no avail. Decided to bitr the bucket before scrapping and put it into local Fiat agents, Mackenzie Motors Inverness for another diagnostic test. They came back with the info I alreadt knew about thse 2 cylinders but, bvless them, they had inserted tiny pins to tighten the connections and the car now runs like a sewing machine. Delighted with my re-born 2006 Croma. So if yours displays Transmission error and fault code P1714 all you need is a good local fiat agent who is prepared to do that wee bit extra and £62+vat for diagnostic test.

"Bitr the bucket"!!!! That should read "bite the bullet"

Glad to hear that it's all working. What plugs /connectors did you clean and athe garage put pins in, was it the injector connectors?

Yes. Apparently with vibration the connections can become a bit slack. I had noticed originally that when I applied pressure on connection to injector 2 that the engine ran better and later when misfiring on injector 3 the same applied. Amazing that this misfiring affected automatic transmission, giving fault code P1714.

That sounds like a quick and relatively easy thing to check. Ours has been having difficulty starting and could be injector related. Can you elaborate on exactly what they did so we might be able to do a similar DIY job? Many thanks in advance.

If you disconnect leads on injectors you will see little holes/sockets on end of lead connectors. The garage told me they inserted tiny pins about the thickness of a hair/couple of hairs into these holes before pushing connectors back on, thus making the connections tighter. Mechanic said they had these tiny pins specifically for that pupose ie making connections tigher.

First step I would recommend is good reliable diagnostic test.

Good luck, Angus

Thanks Angus. I've had the car on diagnostics at two separate garages. One an Alfa / Fiat specialist. Have not been to a FIAT main dealer as there aren't any with good reviews in or close to Glasgow. Inverness just too far away to go to Mackenzie motors. No clear results from the diagnostics. I'll post if I get similar results to you, or indeed any progress.

Hello from Greece.

Thank you Angus, this is the most valuable information I've ever had.
I have a Croma 2.4 mjet
and I had a problem with the gearbox or at least that's what I thought .
In the garage they tell me the error code p1714 concerning solenoide.
I read Angus's story here and I thought to try it.
Thanks God the problem was exacly the same in my car. Loose contacts in first injector.

But I do not understand why this problem had to do with gearbox.
Why error code P1714?
How many people spend money for nothing important like this?

Hundreds of people get charged for work and parts that are not required due to poor diagnostics.
It is possible that the rough running and torque pulses cause by a bad injector could trigger a gearbox fault on an automatic.
Robert G8RPI.

Absolutely. Syptoms, Cause and Effect and complicated bed fellows and often all three along with sensible human brain power and experience have to be carefully considered together and add some thought about downstream and colateral effect possibilites.

Diagnostic kit is an "aid" and not a definitive "diagnosis and solution".

Sadly many people think otherwise and when you are paying good money to a garage, or plumber, etc. then I get really annoyed
