Technical Lost end silencer

Last week I lost my end silencer from a Croma diesel 16V.
To my big supprise, no diffrence in sound was audible.
Is this silencer (p/n 73502843) een unnecessary part?

It may be necessary to stop carbon monoxide entering your car and causing your death and the death of your passengers.

A piece of pipe without silencer should be enough.

You would be wise to check the legal regulations in the Netherlands.
Are vehicles regularly inspected my government approved examiners?

Of course we do have a yearly mot and of course I fitted a new silencer, but it was a strange experience losing a silencer without any difference in sound, not in and not outside the car.
