It stops after about 20 seconds and the car starts OK even when the clicking is happening.

My guess is the starter motor relay but before I buy a replacement thought I'd ask for advice / suggestions.

If it is the relay is it hard to get to (1.9 mjet 8v) or require any specialist tools?

I'll be under the bonnet again today anyway as mes is reporting a problem with the map sensor which I'm planning to change if cleaning the current one doesn't help and changing the thermostat (which I've done before and was a horrible job) so I'll have a decent amount of the right hand side of the engine out anyway.

Did the oil last Sunday, would still love to meet the person responsible for the location of the oil filter.

It sounds like the clicking we used to get from an electrical fuel pump, as it filled up the carburettor,as soon as you switched the ignition on, but I thought they went out years ago. How old is the car? or perhaps someone has added one ,if the original fuel pump was faulty, and they had one handy.
Try switching the ignition on ,wait till the ticking stops; switch it off, wait a few seconds, then switch it on again. If there's no ticking , you have an electric fuel pump somewhere ...

Hi DavyP. I've had the car from new and apart from a swirl egr gasket it is stock so I'm hoping that it's the starter relay and that it's relatively accessible.

Hi, Won't be what I suggested then. Does it start clicking as soon as you switch the ignition on ? or when you go to start the motor?
Sometimes the handbook shows which relays are where on the fuse board , otherwise I'm afraid I can't help. I'm in Middlesbrough , if you need any help.

Hi,
Does it click in the "ON" position or only when you turn to "Start"? If it's straight away it's not the starter relay. It could be a jammed air conditioning flap causing the gears to slip as it tries to go to the home position. However with your other issues I'd be checking for loose battery and earth connections or water in the under bonnet fusebox.

Hi Robert, it's as soon as I put the key in the ignition and does it even with the blower turned off.

I think it's the relay, is it a hard thing to find / access?

Hi Robert would you know if the starter motor is hard to get to?

Looking at Vectra videos on youtube I think it looks as though it's at the back of the engine on the right hand side quite low down but I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.

Hi,
Never taken one out, but it's actually fairly high up on the engine. According to eLearn it comes out from above but you have to remove the battery tray (easy job and makes access better for lots of work) and some coolant pipes. eLearn also has instruction for stripping and cleaning the starter motor. Have you downloaded eLearn for the Croma? It's in the download section https://www.fiatforum.com/downloads.php?do=download&downloadid=373
HTH,

Hi Robert, I think you're right about it being heater related. It's definitely not the starter relay anyway.

Is it difficult to get at the aircon flaps so I can see what's happening in there?

Hi Brian,
No idea on the flaps, I've never done it. eLearn may give a clue.

Happy new year,
Robert.

Thanks anyway Robert.

I remember reading something on one of the other posts about heater related stuff being somewhere around the passenger glove box area so I'll start stripping down around that area and see what I can find.

And a Happy New Year to you and all other forum users. Here's to a trouble free year of motoring.
