is key reader seperate unit or is it connected via code to all computers?

it is infact coded to key and computers

The TEG (key reader) is coded to the keys, body computer, ECU and motorised steering lock unit. You need a matched set or possibly virginised unit(s).

Any idea where to get a virginised key (fell to the floor when I went to my local Fiat dealer and they gave me the price for one

If you have a working key a locksmith like Timpsons should be able to clone it. This saves re-programming the car as well as being cheaper than a key from Fiat.
