Hello,

I have a 2005 1.9 150 croma and I have a problem. usually in the morning when the engine is cold, if a start the engine immediately after turning the key in "on" position the car shakes very badly(like spasms) and it needs almost 10s to stabilize.it seems like half of the engine is working or shth. like this. If I start the engine after I hear the "click"(about 10s in "ON" position) it works like a tractor bout is not hardly shaking.
Any ideas, advice?
Thank you.

Thank you. but there should be a warning or a fault code or sth. I recently made a checkup there were no fault codes regarding this. Anyway, I'll check them both .
Thank you for your answer.

You won't get a warning if the battery is failing, unless the charging system is failing (alternator, earthing problem will bring on battery light on dashboard etc) best to get battery tested

Don't know.much about diesels so can't help with plugs

Hi,
You should not turn the key straight to start with a diesel. There are heater or "glow" plugs that preheat and aid starting, There is an amber warning light with a symbol like a a coil or spring in the instrument cluster. This lights up when you turn the key to "ON" and goes out when the glowplugs are hot. This takes a few seconds, longer when the engine is cold or in cold weather. You should turn the key to "start" just after the warning light goes out.

Hope this helps,

Robert G8RPI.

Thank you for your answer. I pretty much now how it works but I can see that the light goes out too fast after turning the key to "ON"(1-2 sec) that's why I think it's sth else. lately when I start the engine in the morning and this thing happens, it's accompanied by a inner sound, that I can hear it coming from the right side of the engine and stops almost when the engine stabilizes to its normal working sound. This is why I don't think this problem is related to the glowplugs. the sound is like a valve isn't fully opened and it's slowly opening or something like that. Please help...:bang:

OK , diagnostic time..,
COLD engine, you turn on ignition , glow plug light comes ON for @ 3 seconds - then goes OUT,

crank engine - "hunts / shudders" for @10 seconds then runs smoothly

does the glowplug light flash for a few seconds..??

--

IF you then turn off and restart the car does it still shudder for 10 seconds - or is it smooth?,
--
once it's showing TEMP on gauge does a restart make the engine run SMOOTH every time..??

No it doesn't. After it turns off it stays off.

If the restart is within this period it still continues to "hunts / shudders" until the total time about 10s passes.

Yes, if the engine is warmed up, in every engine start it works smoothly.

Charlie

Thanks Charlie.

That is the main problem. I don't have regarding glowplugs. I went to the dealers authorized garage in my country and they told me P010f appears and you have faulty MAF.(because I have loss of acceleration problem in my car). I replaced the MAF and the situation is still the same, even the acceleration problem. Now I have no faults in diagnostics.

some additional information. White smoke comes out of the exhaust when it does this problem. I'll record it somehow and show it to you what it really does.

Hi , Have you tried to turn ignition to the on position a number of times to heat the glow pugs a few times I have not checked but if our Croma's are fitted with a glowpug regulator it might be faulty. The glow plugs should give a good heating before start and should be on for a time after start up.You do not say how cold it is where you are but even the best of diesel engine's sound ruff on start up and if the preheating is not working properly it would cause your trouble [white smoke] especialy if it is freezing.

Several years ago my 2.4 was rough on start up, but it had an error message about glow plugs. I replaced all 5 at about £15 each. I think they are powered for about 30 seconds after start up.

the suggestion of glowplugs is indeed logical..(y)

I'd been mislead by the lack of flashing Glow symbol on dashboard, and the other fault code you had quoted..

So,
turn ignition ON, watch glow symbol go OFF

turn ignition OFF ,

then back ON , watch symbol go OFF,

THEN turn ign. OFF, and back ON,

once the Glow symbol has gone OUT, crank engine on starter, and see if it runs smoother...:)

IF it runs smoother, then fit a new set of glowplugs - as they are obviously struggling to generate enough heat for a clean burn,

let us know what you find,
Charlie
