Hi guys, a newbie here. Was just wondering if anyone can help me please. I've just had my alternator belt changed as it snapped last thursday, jump started the car and it was fine that night and friday. On saturday it would not go over 20mph, was really struggling and then it died. It will not start at all although it does try, it almost sounds like it catches and cuts straight out. Any ideas on what this could be please? Its a 55 plate 1.9D Croma Eleganza. TIA

The serpetine belt, did not run between the timingbelt and crankshaft pully? It might be a timing isseu. I would check the timing of the engine before trying to start it again

It's possible that a piece of the broken belt got into the timing belt and damaged it. It may have skipped a tooth or two later. Who changed the broken belt? They should have checked the timing belt too.

Hi guys it went into my usual mechanic, never had any problems with his work before, unfortunately he's away for 2 weeks and i desperately need my car but don't want a garage ripping me off (single mum lol) i'll go and ask the garage to check the timing :)

not the cheapest of garage price areas..,

in my experience.. if it ran o.k. for a day or so.. it's unlikely to be the belts timing..

more likely to be a sensor or wiring that's been knocked / damaged,

getting fault codes MAY GIVE A CLUE,

Charlie

ran diagnostics and it is the timing and also the DPF :'( could thrashing it clear the DPF if i get the timing sorted it in the garage?

Hi a few people on vectra forum have had timing trouble that was caused by the timing pulley moving. They have had to have a new toothed pulley fitted as its slot and key have broken. It would be a good idea to mention this to your mechanic. Our dpf is easily upset by short runs and I had to regen the thing twice in summer when my son's car was back from uni and it might be just coincidental to your timing problem.

Another possibility I often repeat.

There are 2 mileage resets on oill change, service counter and oil degradation counter. The second is rarely known in service garages, and most are unable to reset it.
The result is that after 22000 miles the regen will never happen if the oill degradation is not reset, because it is assumed the extra temperature will be beyond the ability of the lubrication.
It should be possible to check this with access to the ECU.

What Keith said :)

What does the diagnostic say about the oil degredation? 95% is good somewhat counterintuitively.

It should also say how many kms until the next change if you've got the correct leads.

What is the message about the timing?

Oh and i have got it started finally with some easy start stuff and it now will start after a couple of tries but runs sluggish

Hi that timing sync might be the camshaft sensor and they are £20 ish and easy to change , you can force a regen for the dpf but the engine has to be hot.I can't think why the drive belt failing should upset the timing so it might be coincidence maybe?.

Thanks for all the advice. I've done a forced regen and cleared all stored fault codes and it is now telling me the cam sensor needs changing. Drove car today and it won't go over 20mph, is that because of this or could there be something else wrong that hasn't shown on the dtc scan?

Sorry for being a pain guys, ecuscan says it's the phase sensor which i know is the cam sensor but can anyone help which part is it out of these 2 please as both came up when i entered the reg

I feel absolutely useless, i've changed the cam sensor and the fuel filter and it now starts ok but with no power, the rpm won't go over 1500, dtc still says phase sensor and dpf even though i've cleared them. Starting to lose the will to live lol

I think you may need to check timing on your engine because you are still getting timing fault.

Have you tried disconnecting the air flow sensor and running the engine?
