At last my dream has finally come true.VW get their hats nailed on.German manufacturing has finally been shown for what it is,lies and cheats.

This is all very sad but I guess not unexpected.

I used to work for a company for over 28 years that were respected by employees & industry to be the best employer, best educator, best rewarding, best ethical and employment integrity and a top 100 Fortune company since the listing began.

Today this company does not figure in the top 500, has on going legal disputes and little to no employee support.

I would be inclined to say that the demise of all our once great and respected companies is down to "Pigs At The Trough". Executives on ludicrous financial rewards with no respect for their employees and even if they *uck up they have a gold, no platinum, rewarding contract deal even under severance.

Who knows what other car companies will be caught up in this "current" scandal and totally illegal and dishonest saga but I pretty much bet the executives at the top will escape clean and walk of with off with big payoffs.

I just feel sorry for the VW/other employees as they have been truly *ucked and no doubt jobs will be lost!

A very sad day/state.

This is Very Bad News for anyone with a diesel since hardly any of the manufacturer's tests can be replicated in the real world. Everyone knew this but the regulators can hardly turn a blind eye any more.

Expect the tax / regulatory focus on diesels to move from CO2 to NOx in the short term and for diesel cars to be priced / regulated out of existence in due course.

Well a little clarification is required in that the manufacturers tests are actually recognised/approved international test cycles so are in fact industry standard *laboratory* tests. These will never replicate real road test figures because things like wind resistance and even differing road surfaces can not be replicated. Worse still I have no idea how one can combine wind drag, road surfaces with inclines, varying air temperatures etc.

Claimed MPG is one on my pet hates as I have never as an end user got near to what the manufacturer/industry laboratory tests claim which form part of the "sales" crap. MPG is something every car user can and should measure and track over the long term. However we can't do any measurements of CO, NOX, particulates etc. Our UK MOTs only measure CO at fast and slow idle so real time road driving is not measured. NOX is not measured. Regarding particulates my local council station say that current MOT measurement will only fail vehicles that fill the testing station with clouds smoke/soot.

Will be interesting to see how the legislators / industry respond to all of this.

Maybe we come to country by country real tests.

e.g. UK climate mid season tests. 100 cars, 100 different drivers on a variety of routes/terrains etc. But even this would then yield disputes and contention between manufacturers and country by country results.

Bottom line. Laboratory tests are probably still the best "can do" level playing field measure available but this relies on people not cheating. VW either cheated or played the game. Either way the ramifications of this is most probably going to dig deep into just about all areas of the motor industry.

In F1 the engine ECU is fixed/dictated, with software by Microsoft Dynamics. Teams have can change stuff but only in pre-defined/approved operational areas.

This could end up coming to street cars from any manufacturer.
