General New Croma

General New Croma

I got picked up from the airport from one last week. A demo at work for the co car scheme.

A silver multijet, it seemed ok, the guy driving reckoned for 150bhp it was very flat, his tdi Octavia was better. But i think this was down to the extra high gearing and his laziness. I was pretty jetlagged so didnt take too much notice but seemed well built, quiet and reasonable spacious.
No fancy back seat like the stilo. Seems a similar size to the stilo wagon.

There is a black one sat outside at work that i have looked at and i can believe they are trying to sell it, I think the styling is hideous. Its a high bulbous car with a low non descript front end, slab sides and rear lights that look like they are off a different car.

Havent met one person that likes it so far (from the outside).

Not much of a fiat to me.

The Fiat Croma is a shared platform with the vauxhall signum, has same suspension layout etc - even has GM stamped on all the fluid resevoirs - is not a bad car, but I wouldn't buy one - not new thats for sure as they seem too expensive for what you actually get.

Also vauxhall chain driven engine (with the oil channel problem sorted) so it's going to get some real high mileages on these(y) Quite a innotive car in many departments & loads to keep us busy......I hope;)
Expensive yes but loads safety features, anyway price cut soon;)

BUT why have I never seen a ad on TV/magazine/billboard for them:confused:

Doesn't that hold fast for a load of FIATs!

I vaguely remember the Stilo ones - one with that middle aged guy blatting about, and then one with a load of youngsters playing with the buttons. Thats it!

And as for Ulysse adverts  can't recall a single one....

I CAN REMEMBER THE STILO ADS I HAVE GOT ON OF THEM ON TAPE SOMEWHERE

Had a spin in a black eleganza multijet down to Nottingham and back yesterday.

First impressions;
still looks terrible
multijet badge only half stuck on
bit of trim fallen off above the handbrake slider
cant reach the handbrake
great cool box in console
quiet
fast
high gearing. 110mph in 6th was about 3200rpm.
great suspension and body control. (normal fast driving)
impossible to find trip distance on the computer than only has speed beep in its menu.
My knee sits uncomfortable again the gear lever housing like in a Panda.
Plenty of space but no clever rear seat.
Front door handles look like ashtrays (which there are plenty already)
Seat backrest adjuster feels very cheap.

I was given a 1.9 JTD to try out for 3 days by my local dealer to test.

Very well kitted out with leather interior, twin roofs etc.
Heck of a lot of room for 5.

The engine pulls very strongly, but it does have to be revved to get the best from it. It's also very easy on the derv.

It feels a big car.

Have to say I thought it handled very well. It Certainly corners very flatly, much the same way the Multipla corners. I loved the gear change. I found it very comfortable to drive although the ride was quite firm which I like since I drive an Evo integrale everyday.

Overall I really liked it but I came away trying to figure out were it's going to find it's market. It feels like a people carrier trying to be a car and Fiat have that one covered with the Multipla (which I love).

Very expensive to. The one I had was £19000 with all the toys fitted

In the 3 days I had it I was asked was it a Lexus and a Merc. When they seen the badges they thought I was having a laugh. Very odd. I'm not joking.

Would I buy one, No, I'd buy a mk1 Multipla and still have enough to buy a used Alfa GT.

dont understand after spending all the multi million on it,they give it a stupid handbrake that interfears with the arm rest, back seats that dont fold flat or fold in different ways like other MPV's.a high lip that hinders loading.otherwise, not a bad car.in three yrs time, will make a good buy[bound to drop like a stone].will properly end up as taxi's.:)

We bought one, with all the options fitted. My wife wanted a bigger car and she couldn,t wait for the 159 sportswagon so she settled for the croma, personally i still have not gotten used to the styling but its her car and she loves it.

we go away for weekends quite often and its greatt for that, actually its a pretty decent car well put together handles surprising well and the 18'' rims are a definate plus. just takes some time getting used to the driving position feels like you are sitting up way to high.

My verdict...Good family car

I am a guy that has bought a Croma and it is GREAT.
The hight of a small 4x4 so easy to get in and out.
A saloon type rear seat and not three seperate seats that are not comfortable for two rear passengers.
A big boot that is like an estate with the rear seat down.
A cross type of car, saloon, estate and easy access.
So good the three pointed star now make one, they call it the R Class.
The 150 multijet pulls my caravan at 60mph up any hill and as someone has said full of usefull bells and whistles. Don't knock it till you have driven one for a distance and set the car to your liking.

And another thing. You don't need to use the handbrake on hills over 15 degrees due to the electronic brake hold that lets you move your foot from the brake pedal to the throttle without the car rolling back.
As I said don't knock it till you have had one or read the handbook.
