Hi,

Driving up the Thanet way this morning when I lost some power and the Check Engine Light and message came up.

Not very helpful as no other errors appeared.

Could anyone point me in the first place to look or will I need a bod with a diagnostics tool?

Although less responsive, the car is still getting up to 70-80 mph (so far...)

I've got a
fiat croma 1.9L diesel hatchback semi automatic 2006 (56)

Thanks in advance

Hi- Check the EGR valve situated top back right of the engine on the inlet manifold. Also while you are there take out the pressure sensor next to it. It will look like a carbon blob but is actually a plastic cage with a yellow sensor inside it. Gentle cleaning with a toothbrush and WD 40 will see it clean.
Having the errors read will no doubt cost you at a garage but if you have a laptop a code reader will save you loads and a whole lot of time and heartache thinking what the cause of probs may be.
Simple things happen more often than complicated ones, its my maxim , and has kept me out of the grasp of the greasy rag mob quite a few times.!

Chhers Tarquin,

Here's what happened.

The light came on on my way to work. A loss of responsiveness when the message came up and then the car seemed to go back to normal (although the light stayed on).

20 miles later I arrived at work.

In the afternoon, back in the car for the 50 mile drive home.

Light back on on startup with the message. The light stayed on but car driving fine.

30 miles later, I stopped in a layby and consulted the manual (which wasn't very helpful. However, it did say that if the light went out then everything was okay but the error would be recorded.

When I started up the car again - no light or message....

I've now driven a further 60-70 miles with no repeat.

I think I'll just hold my breath for a while and see if it returns.

I'll keep in mind your top tips though...

Thanks

Regardss

HI Gaz- reading between the lines this could be something as simple as a loose / corroded contact on a sensor etc ( simple but a bugger to find without a readout:cool:).
I know you are now running ok but as a matter of course you should clean the boost sensor anyway, it takes about 10mins and the change to the performance is quite remarkable as it allows the turbo to work better.
Mine was running fine until I cleaned it for the first time, the car was like"s**t off a shovel " as we say up north and the consumption was better as well. I clean it every year and it is always better after I have done it, you tend not to notice the gradual drop off in performance between cleans.(y)

Thanks both,

I will have a look at the Elearn to see if I can find out how to do the clean.

Is it something I (not a mechanic) could handle or is it really tricky?

Its a piece of p**s. Just one set screw and out it comes. If memory serves it has a sealing ring which might become dislodged but other than that its easy . 1st time I did it it took me nearly as long to get the engine cover off!!! as it did to get the sensor out:p

Hi,

Had a go at this over the weekend. Eventuially found Doofer's post on this subject at www.fiatforum.com/croma-ii/246118-clean-your-boost-sensor-now.html

Of course, I had to pretend I had a Vectra to look at the instructions.

They were perfect.

Removed thre clip, Unscrewed the bolt and took it out.

Completely crud filled.

I had a can of Carb Cleaner so attacked it with that and an old toothbrush, cleaning it untill the little sensor was returned to yellow.

Re-Assembled the whole thing and that was that.

It was:

a) a piece of p**s
b) amazing results - car goes like the proverbial off a shovel as promised.

I then went for a drive and bought myself a T shirt that says

"Today I did something Mechanical"

Thanks both for the suggestion - it's been added to my very small list of things that I can do myself regularly

Regards
