I own a 55 plate Croma Prestigio diesel auto.

Had poor economy since I bought 2 yrs ago - 36-37 mpg (mixed driving) - max mpg obtained was 44 ish.

Anyway, apparently the intercooler is blowing and has become distorted. The garage I took it to ordered an intercooler but it was the wrong one. He tried a different supplier and got another incorrect one. So, he gave up and has returned the car to me (no charge).

Have found one (from a Croma) on a scrappy website (had stuff from them before and has been OK) - however, as the garage has such a problem getting the right one I am a little reluctant in case it too won't fit. Is there a difference between the one fitted to an auto rather than manual?

Also, would the dodgy intercooler account for my fuel economy?

A further mystery with the car which may be linked to the intercooler is the fact that, occasionally (usually after a steady motorway run (70-80) I get a terrible smell and plumes of acrid smoke coming from under the car (not from the end of the exhaust). It clears very quickly and there appears to be no ill-effect. I have checked engine oil regularly and has not used a drop, and. to be honest, it doesn't smell like burning oil.

Help!

Help!

Good morning-- Sounds like you are suffering a "belief in the brochure numbers" with the consumption:p. I would kill for the consumption your getting:rolleyes:. The smoke is probably from it going through a regen of the DPF so unless there is a leak somewhere so the increase in the temperature during regen may be burning off some fluid that could be leaking from somewhere else. I have no experience with automatics but there are various reservoirs on mine located at the back of the engine bay . Brakes ,power steering fluid, etc and you will have the extra of gearbox fluid as well. Have you noticed any loss of these on a semi regular basis?
Hope this helps(y)
