Afternoon

Just after registering on the forum so hi to all.
New to owning a Fiat too so interested to see how this goes :)

I'm having difficulties with the DPF and spotted what looks like some very useful help on here so hopefully that will sort me out. Also looking into the EGR valve too.

Hopefully I won't be back on too much with problems!

Steven :D

Hi Steven, welcome to the forum / support group.

Hopefully your troubles with the egr / dpf won't be too significant but provided the oil's been changed as required it's likely that your troubles will be more egr than dpf.

Do you want to post some more info so we can gude you through what to do? We'll need to know about any error messages on the dash, what the engine feels like and any diagnostics that have been done so far.

Meant to say that problems which appear, at least to the ecu, to be dpf are often egr, maf or boost sensor problems rather that a fault with the dpf itself. The dpf is normally a symptom of at least one other problem.

Unless the oil's not been changed or the oil change counter (which is different from the service counter) hasn't been reset. The dpf is very fussy about that.

Very few garages are aware of the oil degradation counter, most can't even reset it. The effect is that when it reaches 22000 miles the DPF will not regen.

Well I had the car diagnosed by a mechanic after it went into Limp mode. Said the DPF was faulty. Had it regenerated and gave it a good run including a lot of motorway driving but it went into Limp Mode again after a week. This has happened 3 more times since after a week each time. It's had an oil and filter change, air, fuel and pollen filters and the EGR valve off and thoroughly cleaned. As well as DPF cleaning fluid added. Still gone into Limp mode so I bought a new DPF. Now I just cannot get anyone to fit it in Belfast! :0

Well I had the car diagnosed by a mechanic ...

Presumably he doesn’t want the work & can’t advise on someone who does?
(Some mechanics can view exhaust systems work as beneath their skills).

The DPF manufacturer can advise what models are common. But I believe the Croma DPF is common with sister ships – Vectra-Charlie, Signum, Alfa 159, Saab 9-3. So try for a FIAT/Alfa/Saab/Vauxhall mechanic who wants the work.

I had egr touble on my 1.9 mjet 150 prestigio, took it to demon performance in crewe and had quantum remap with dpf removal, (Only internals) and egr/dpf delete off ecu. Have had no problems at all and power/torque increase is brilliant. Also passed mot this month with no trouble. Cost £330.

I had thought about the removal but worry about the Mot. I heard the power and mpg's are better without it. But I bought a new DPF and found a mechanic who is looking at it tomorrow to hopefully fit and sort it. If all goes well, I'll probably get her chipped!

But was the interval counter reset using software? If not then all the oil and filter changes would have made no difference at all.

I get oil changes done at an independent garage, but reset the counter myself, using free software and an £8 cable. I doubt most garages would know how to do it, but I could be wrong.

Agree with doofer, ask your mechanic what mileage is shown on the oil degradation counter, and the oil service counter, yes both.
Even Fiat dealers have been beaten with this.

Hi Steven, and welcome. Alway remember owning a Croma is like having a very beautiful mistress; it will not stop you going bankrupt, but you will keep your sanity. It can make you very happy, and yet reduce you to tears with its occasional histrionics (and it will).

Have had mine seven years now and can't bear to part with it.

I should add that, from my bit of knowledge, if you don't get a computer to have a chat with your car then your new DPF will also block fairly quickly, as it will never get regenerated.

I would put money on it that the egr cylinder is faulty. My father has just bought a 150 mjet from Newcastle upon tyne.On the way home engine light came on and it derated. As soon as we got home put fes on it,egr cylinder knackered.New cylinder job sorted.Another good one it the vacumm pipe to the vnt actuator on the turbocharger, this goes brittle and breaks off.

Another croma owner in belfast, way hey! JRC Auto in Lisburn is fiat /alfa specialist. Had the usual power steering problem even though my car had new wiring to pump, Johnny Cargo checked it out and solved problem for £30 last Jan/Feb and its still fine. Would recommend him.

Never thought of getting any resets done after the oil filter change. I'll have to check with the mechanic.

Cheers. Gonna have to get this checked

Hi

Seems like a very good car so if and when I get this engine issue sorted and running properly, I'll be much happier! :-D

So I just had a look under the car to see about fitting a new DPF. Got a neighbour of mine who works for Jaguar to have a look and he said to start her up as I mentioned the noise of her. He had a look at the intercooler and noticed the bottom of it dropped down a bit! So maybe the intercooler has been causing the problem all along! Might get a new one to see if that sorts it and return the DPF. So will update again. :-D
