Hi, well the wife was having trouble opening the passenger door from inside, so after taking off the Inner Trim I noticed that the Chrome door Handle has cracked, therefore when pulling on the handle it will not pull the cable to open the door. I have looked high and low for a replacement without any joy. Suggestions on obtaining a replacement or does anyone think its possible to glue. Thanks in Advance..:)

Common fault, the spring is massively too strong. If you search there is some info, including part number (could have changed?).
When I replaced mine it was about £15. ePer parts list might be able to tell you if the continental version is the same (drivers side)

Hi Evo,
It's unibond express repair putty. It's for repairing and strengthening and is sticky for about 15 mins or so before it sets solid.

I put it all around the broken bit on my handle so that it spreads the strength of the spring over a much larger area and it seems to have worked OK. I had to keep waggling the handle to stop it setting around the pin whilst it was curing to stop it setting the whole thing solid.

Definitely useful stuff to have - I've used it to repair various things and it seems to last well.

I had the door card off again today though as the small green clip that holds the release cable into the door had came loose. The handle was fine though :)

Just had a look at the packet and it lists uses like furniture repairs, sticking rails to walls and making replacement chain links. And it is quite strong.

Thank You Brian, and thanks evo. I will certainly be visiting B&Q.

I had same problem at same door 11 months ago. Used some plastic from an expired bank card and some loctite glue as you can see in the pictures. 11 months since the repair and still working great. I had a problem also with a lock on the rear left door, which I solved it in the same way and its still working after a year. Below you have some pictures with the repairs. These are easy and lasting fixes if you like making the job and saving your money. The door handle maybe its not so expensive, but the door lock sure is. I enjoyed making the repairs, had to try until ordering a new components and was worth to try. I was thinking of making some DIY's and I will if others thinks this is helpful. Enjoy :)

The main problem with Croma door handles is that they are made of plastic and the spring is far too strong. The part is under most stress when its allowed to snap back into place , which you cannot help doing during normal use.

Anybody who has to take the door handle/ door card off for any reason should take the spring out and use two pairs of pliars to take some tension off the spring. I did this and it works fine .

Would you Adam and Eve it - guess what happened this weekend....

I have tried the repair route, but the back of the drivers handle had broken in so many places I'd need to mould the whole thing in araldite for it to have stood any chance of being reusable :D

Can now see what others have said about that "bullworker" spring

Oh well, part number 71745048 to be ordered tomorrow - hopefully not too much of a wait for it to come in. Latest eper I can find looks like its £30+ though... :(

Also spotted I've got to drill 4 bl**dy rivets out within each door before I can upgrade the parchment-paper cone speakers :bang: but does look I will be able to convert the spare tweeters from my old 166 DSP system to fit, so not all bad (y)

Latest eper I can find looks like its £30+ though... :( When you are taking the pivot pin out to release the spring you will find that the pin has splines at one end to secure it from sideways movement, push it out so you can put it back in the same way. If you dont and drive it all the way through the splines will gouge all the plastic holes that the pin holds . This could reduce the life of the plastic parts.

Dont forget--- the new spring with the new handle can be"pressure reduced " before you fit the new handle . Two pairs of pliars does the trick;)

I've bought 2 pairs of those ebay adapters Hal' - for the same reason :D

Roberto, I have the Alfa DSP door speakers from my old 166. Cannot recall who the original manufacturer are, but they have kevlar cones and can take some real punishment while putting out a nice punchy sound  They made a hell of a difference to the 166 even with the DSP off.

I don't currently have tweeters in the back doors - but will have soon as there are also 4 of those from the same DSP set-up.

Door handle ordered today - none at the Dealer (surprise), but in stock in the UK so expected Wednesday. £34 :(

Drivers side inner door handle broken. I tried the glue and bank card fix. It lasted two days until the bank card cracked along the original fault. Maybe I should have used one from a solvent account! My friendly dealer got me one for 35 euro. Hardly worth the trouble of attempting the repair. Another Croma learning curve!

Thanks Roberto, The glue was fine but the bank card gave up.
Radlet, 35 euro = £29.71 so I got trade plus sympathy discount!!
If I was driving Toyota I would be lonely and smug (and boring)

If it were me i would bite the bullet and go to the dealer and be sure its the right part.
When you do get a new handle make sure , above all, that you take some strength out of the spring. did this with mine and its as good as new. What really does it some harm is to have it slip out of your grasp on opening and the spring them snaps it back like the cash drawer at Arkwrights:D, and the plastic just cannot stand the strain (bit like myself;))
