General winter wheels and tyres

General winter wheels and tyres

Given you live just a few miles down the road from me, I can see why you are asking this question.

I have to admit I was wondering about the capabilities of the Croma on the white slippy stuff. On the plus side it has traction control and the diesel, with high torque at low revs, is perfick for the snow. On the down side I was worried about the auto box and the 215/17 tyres.

I need not have worried. The auto box is quite happy to set off in second gear and despite living at the bottom of a incline the Croma has manufully handled everything - in fact it is the only car on our road not to have got stuck half way up the hill (including my neighbour's Mitsu Pajero - but then we all know what Pajero means in Spanish).:tosser:

The two who earlier this year were smugly showing off their newly acquired 10 reg and 60 reg 3 series Beemers didn't even take them out of the garage. One has been seen having to go to work in his wife's Micra.:ROFLMAO:

The trick is knowing when to turn off the TC as it just grids to a halt if you don't, but you risk spinning the wheels if you switch too early.

10" of snow - no bother. Let's hear it for the Croma.(y)

...Astra H, Signum, Saab 93, Alfa 166 & Brera wheels too. I got 4 16" steel wheels from Vec C with wheelcovers. Punched out the Opel/Vaux signs and glued on Fiat. For tires I went with Blizzak LM25 and they are good. Last night was first freezing rain snow and temperatures around 2C (35F) and the car like last winter too is very managable.

I’m sure some have fitted Alfa wheels on their Croma – there was an Alfa set (5-horseshoe style) in Classifieds only few weeks back … DIDI?

Any problems? For example – should you want to downsize from 18” to (say) 17” then Alfa 17” are (I believe?) 7.5Jx17 (& not 7Jx17 as standard for Croma).

The 1.9 150 and 2.4 have truck brakes (or they seem to!) so you need minimum 16" wheels.

As you drop a rim size you need to drop the width and increase the sidewall percentage. This means the reduction in rim width (J) should not be a problem. You might need some spacers to increase the offset - this depends on the clearances with the suspension and steering.

205/55R17

Is the Mito 4x98 or 4x100

How about the Gulietta, is that back to the traditional Alfa 5 bolt?
Still not sure to be honest.
The average MiTo owner has never opened the owner's manual, so looking at the markings on a wheel is well beyond them..! :)

The Giulietta is 5-stud, but not sure if it is back to 5x98

Tell me about it. Who decided to walk to a local factor, & physically carry 2x 292mm rear discs & all-corner pads back home? I was that soldier! (Fortunately the 305mm front discs were delivered by carrier).

Stepping down from a Croma 7.5Jx18ET41 (225/45-18) to a Croma 7Jx17ET41 (215/50-17) is obviously fine … but fitting (say) an Alfa 159 7.5Jx17 then takes you back to the same rim width as the Croma 18”

Croma
6.5Jx16ET41….205(or215)/55-16
7Jx17ET41….215/50-17
7.5Jx18ET41….225/45-18

Alfa 159
7Jx16ET??….205(or215)/55-16
7.5Jx17ET??….225/50-17
8Jx18ET??….235/45-18

Yes, but the center bore can be widened as well, probably not worth the hassle unless the rims were inexpensive considering 166 is an older model.
