General winter wheels and tyres

General winter wheels and tyres

I am going to put some winter tyres on our recently acquired Croma. Ideally I would like a whole set of wheels rather than changing tyres each time so have been looking for some on eBay etc. There is a set of Alfa 159 wheels with tyres at 225/50/17 and I'm "assuming" this is fine on the Croma as the 18" wheels on the Croma are 225??

Would appreciate any guidance before bidding. If that doesn't work then I'm in the market for 7J/17" from Croma, Vectra, etc.

Thanks.

About 6 years ago I bought a set of unused 159 17" wheels with Michelin tyres for £300. I found them an improvement on the OE 18s.
Also compatible with some of the larger GM models.

Hi Keith,

That's good news and a good deal. Good to know the 225 is ok, and I guess the 225/50 didn't cause any problems with it being a slightly larger radius than the 215/50/17.

I will have to check the speedo with the sat nav to make sure I know how it is reading.

Thanks for the input.

I've never bothered with winter tyres or snow chains but even in the really bad snow and ice a few years ago, when the authorities were telling everyone to stay at home and it was -20 or thereabouts, I never had a problem with ordinary tyres fitted and 215/50 17s.

It handles really well in the snow and ice and even when the roads were almost impossible to walk on (remember it was so cold that the grit froze) it didn't miss a beat. I ended up doing a "milk round" collecting colleagues to take them in to work, which doubtless made me really popular :)

The ABS stopped working when it filled up with snow but that wasn't a problem either.

Bought very nice set of used Alfa Brera alloys off ebay, and ordered Nokian winter tyers, 215/50/17. Should all arrive and be fitted by end of next week. Will let you know how they are.

Hi Folks,

As promised here is a quick update on the winter tyres. From earlier posts you will see that I bought a set of very nice Alfa Brera Horseshoe alloys and had them shipped directly to the garage for fitting. I used Greenlaw garage in Paisley (Glasgow) who were great from start to finish. They also carry our servicing and various repairs etc but only have experience of tyre fitting. I had the tyres (Nokian WRD3) shipped to the house as Greenlaw were not on TyreLeader's list of garages.

I dropped off the tyres so the garage could fit to the new wheels without nme waiting. They called when ready and swapped the current (Summer) wheels over to the winter wheels. They also fixed an exhaust heatshield where a retaining clip had come off, courtesy of the truly dreadful state of some of the roads. It's a side note but we have moved back to the UK after 20 odd years in France living in a small village. The roads in the UK are like the 3rd world by comparison. Shocking.

We have not had challenging conditions since the winter tyres have been fitted but the initial experience is all good with respect to noise and grip. A surprising observation is that these winter tyres make for a more comfortable ride ride compared to the summer tyres (Federal Formosa). I have used these tyres in France in the snow and I know they are very good.

Will report back if there is anything significant to mention. Stay safe.
