General Service & Oil Intervals

General Service & Oil Intervals

I have been quoted £30 + VAT to turn off the Oil Change Light by my local dealer which is a half hour. This is in Cheshire.

Having recently been in four dealerships (Fiat/Vauxhall/Hyundai/VW) I noticed the lack of customers. A common factor was that the service desk in each one was ringing round people, trying to drum up business.

Agree, times are tight for most dealerships & makes but Ford (and vauxhall so was surprised you included them) have the luxury of large fleet markets & mobility to keep them going.

Fiat (IMO) should aim to get, say the bravo, contracts & press harder for mobility.

Now I'm confused....care to expand....or contract ?

What is the recgonised term/name for the top/leading Fiat Technician in a franchised dealer garage?

If I remember I'll ask tomorrow when I'm getting the oil light / warning reset. Car has now covered 3200 miles since the light first came home and the last time it regenerated the DPF was last Wednesday on my way home from work. It's still running well and returning 40+mpg so if there is a forced halt to DPF regenerations or reduced stress mode on Cromas then it hasn't had an effect yet.

On that subject, as far as I understand it the reason the oil becomes contaminated during DPF regens is because Diesel is injected into the cylinders on the exhaust stroke to allow it to burn in the exhaust. Combustion is not complete and some diesel gets past the rings into the oil. Eventually the diesel + contaminant level in the oil would be detrimental to engine life thus dictating an oil change.

I could of course have got it completely wrong and thus will don my flameproof underpants in anticipation...:nono:

DTEC = Diagnostic Technician ..... or what ever they are called. Not a spanner wielder :)

Chief Monkey Spanner & Examiner wielder is not an acceptable answer!

DECT?

Or is that a telephone technology?

How about DET?

Sorry everyone, the people at the garage I went to this morning didn't know what the Tech equivalent of Yoda is either!

I was actually quite happy with the level of service received. But, how's this - they told me today that my car is still outstanding three recalls. When I bought the car in March from another Fiat dealer I was told that all recalls had been satisfied. So; not only did they break the lugs on two engine covers, chisel the sump plug off, hammer an allen key into it instead of the Ribe bit when refitting then overtightened it, not reset the oil change warning system, use the wrong oil, but the sales people either lied or were incompetent.

Is that really acceptable in this day and age? One of the recalls is the toe-in one. As I had been told the recall had been done but was still unhappy with the rear wheel alignment I paid to have it done elsewhere. I have therefore wasted my money - it's fair to say I'm unhappy about this.

As far as the rest of it goes, the car now drives slightly more smoothly due to the gearbox software having been updated. The engine performance and economy have not been affected, so whether the DPF would eventually clog up or not is still unknown. It's been worth a trip to the dealers for the peace of mind / software update / recall info though.

Is it against forum rules to 'name and shame' on here?

Odd about Croma recalls, I can't find any on VOSA website, all the old GT recall/campaigns are there.
My Croma was first regd June 2006, haven't found the date of manufacture yet. Also the service book recall page is empty.

Thanks T14086, nearest Fiat dealer is 22 miles away, will check when near. Perhaps with very few Cromas its not worth Vosa entering details. I did check my Alfa with the dealer though. (same dealer).

To my knowledge VOSA based recalls are soley and purely road safety issue recall issues.

Fiat, as do other manufacturers, have thier "own" recall and "notification" mechanisms which my, or may not, be aligned with VOSA safety recalls.

To my knowledge the Croma has not yet been subject to a formal VOSA safety recall issue. However the are a number of Fiat recalls/next service/pre delivery etc. "actions" that have to be checked and carried out.

I don't work in trade/Fiat dealership so cannot definitively comment on current Fiat product serivce issues/methods.

Not yet. I emailed UIFTECH and they said their tool was OK. I then clarified and they then said it probably wasn't suitable. So at the moment, as I'm not yet in need of one, I have backed off the hunt. However when I get bored I quite often hit Google with queries to see if anything new appears. The number and makes of top end kit (over £1000) which now do service and oil resets on Fiat is growing daily. Hopefully we will soon get a cheap solution like all the ones out there for BMW, Merc, Audi, etc.

Odly some of the Fiat camper diesel vans have documented end user reset sequences for their service and oil lights but but not the cars.

When you get bored one weekend you can spend your weekend trying as many novel button, pedal, switch sequences and combinations as you can to see if there is a magic sequence. Please report back :)

Just for general information.

Have just had my Croma 1.9 16V (150) service and specifically asked for the oil degradation status information.

Miles Since Last Oil Change : 12,260
Oil Degradation : 40%
Oil Miles Remaining : 20,500km = 12,812m

During this 12,260 miles I've towed my caravan over 3,000 miles.

Had the oil change anyway, but at least I can now judge that I doubt I will ever hit the Oil Change Light before 18,000 miles.

For whats it worth, I feel that oil changes should be done to the type of driving that is done.

I used to do high miles and and had the oil changed every 18k. Now that I am doing 7 to 10k a year I will have the oil changed every 12 months whatever mileage I have accummalated and have the Examiner rest the oil program.

I in another thread got slammed for NOT using Selenia WR, because its the recomended oil to use in the Croma....It is if you are having services every 18k. I have done so far 4600 miles on Selenia Turbo Diesel 10w/40 and the oil is still crystal clear with no carbon build up / discolouration. Where as when WR was in that had already slightly discoloured by 3000 Miles. Yes use WR if still within the 3 year warranty, not saying you should not.

Post warranty consider Selenia TD, as I have found consumption has not dropped, is very clean and I find the engine in quieter when warm to the WR that I had in the past.

Just wish my local factors stocked it.
