Dose anyone know if the 1.9 JTD engine or even the JTDm would fit in the Coupe? I have the chance of a Coupe with no engine for a couple of hundred £ and am now making my own biodiesel so would be tempted to give it a try.

I know it’s a bit of a shame to doom a coup to dieseldome but when your fuel is costing about 10p/L and is about as carbon neutral as you can get its hard to justify petrol. And why should I be restricted to boring rep mobiles just to run diesel.

Also dose anyone know how to identify the different BHP JTD engines and what cars to find them in?

Cheers guys

i'm not sure about the JTDm engines.

the only two engines i know would be bolt in conversions would be the 1.9JTD and 2.4JTD from the bravo/marea range, you would ideally need a full car to do the conversion, it would be kind of the opposite of what i have done to my Marea :D

Thanks,
Ry

My thinking is the 1.9 with a race chip (150BHP) as the 2.4 would probably be a bit heavy. I have a “U Pull It” scrap yard just down the road, can’t see any diesels in there website at the moment as it keeps crashing but there prices are good. About £100-£400 gets you 7 hours to strip what you want from the car plus £30 for them to remove the engine & gearbox for H&S reasons.

the 2.4 wont be much weight difference to the 20v n/a as they use the same suspension.

it would be your choice on which suspension you want to use as both will fit either way.

you will need everything out of the engine bay including subframe, steering rack etc, you will also need the exhaust system and plate above the exhaust which has the gearstick & handbrake attached.

engine loom & ECU, you may also need the abs system including rear arms if you want ABS as they differ between Marea & coupe.

doing the conversion would take about 2 weeks mechanically, then probably a few more weeks to get your head around the electronics to get it running.

as its a diesel conversion you would need the fuel tank and probably the fuel lines aswell.

good luck if you go for it, would be interesting :)

Don't Alfa use a 1.9 that's around 170bhp that with a map would be no slouch and still be reasonably good on MPG.

Diesel conversion is an interesting idea. If you do go for it I hope you post regular progress on it. (y)

dont you think thats a little narrow sighted?

the Audi R8 is available in diesel now.....

Nope.

Don't get me wrong I have no problem with diesels, even diesel Alfa's, but I do have a problem with Diesel Coupes.

The Coupe is special, but diesel engines are not.

Sorry. :D

PS: I don't like Audis much either

Fiat are on the forefront of diesel technology. A diesel coupe could be awesome.

It's a blatant shame that all fiat coupes are unreasonably quick (atleast the UK market ones) as the insurance group pushes the car away from many people.

A nice clean couple is a thing of beauty. Doesnt need to hit 0-60 in 6.5 seconds to impress anyone.

Insurance group is probably more due to high repair costs. Issues today include the non-availability and high prices of bonnets, so most insurers will write off a Coupe that's had a front-end collision.

2.4 diesel lump is too tall to fit under the Coupe bonnet

No reason why a 1.9 JTD wouldn't fit though

sure?

although i have both 20vT and 2.4JTD engines in Marea's i know the clearances are pretty similar, happy to photograph both to show the similarities :)

i'm more than happy without measuring up that it would fit without problem

The 2.4 Stilo engine fits under the coupe bonnet. I cannot see why A diseasel wouldn't fit either.

There is a Alfa GTV on ebay that has been converted to a 2.4 JTD

Considering the front chassis is pretty similar on the Coupe and GTV that would also suggest that it fits OK.
