my PC is infected?

I keep getting a message which I can't get rid of saying my computer is infected
by malware, and basically click here to install. Its not a popup ad it is in a bubble pointing to the security symbol down on the taskbar(next to the clock). It takes me to spyaxe web site were it downloads itself. I can run it and it finds 8 infections but you have to pay to delete them
I think there is something not quite right about this and would just like to get rid of the message

Any ideas ?

i dont know about how to get rid of the message, but try going to www.trendmicro.com and then clicking on housecall to get rid of any viruses free.

Re: my PC is infected?

OK, I had this the other day. if you're running Windows XP (which i assume you are), do a system restore. one that is from 2-3 days ago.

Has it changed the background as well? and your homepage when you open IE?

Re: my PC is infected?

Basically, the virus takes over certain things. the only way to get rid of it for good, is going to c:/windows and then finding 5 .exe's... tool1.exe, tool2.exe, tool3.exe, tool4.exe and (you guessed it) tool5.exe, delete them, then run the system restore. that's how i did it and all is well now
