how this thing work? ive not had a grown up's phone before

I cant get it to connect to my home wi-fi, it connects to wifi in shops but not my own.

Daughter has the same phone and she reckons i am doing it right at the phone end. i tried removing security from my hub but it still wont connect, when i click conect it just says saved

You've probably put the wrong password in. Get the phone to forget the connection and start again

we all tried that a few times already

this is strange if i deliberately put in the wrong password for my wifi it does not say its wrong it just saves it.
but if i try to connect to next door it says its wrong password

Try changing the wifi channel. You can get a free app to help you decide which one to try (eg. Wifi Analyser on Android)

that didn't work there are only 3 wifi in range i think the other 2 are the houses on either side or one next door one a few doors down. on that Wifi Analyser none cross over the other.

Does your router have MAC addressing filtering turned on?

no but i already tried turning access control on and entering mac address manually, that didn't work either

router is a DG834G

computer said new update available for phone, i installed it. wi-fi now works
