laptop GFX card is on its way out

well I'll be firing off an email to ask what the deal is

I'll add this random other stuff
Theres a broken cable retention clip on the rear.so i asked for a price for repair while it was in.
£118
so i didnt take that offer
also in the box was a note apologising for the problem with my Vaio saying it was repaired and had been "thoroughly cleaned" and included a cleaning cloth.
well the little blue cloth is nice but the unit hasnt been cleaned at all ;)

neither are biggies but it was all going so smoothly till today

Which cable retention clip is broken? They're usually either built into the casing, the motherboard or least common of all, a daughterboard.

Sony are completely shocking nowadays.

You defo have a case. It's not 'fit for purpose' after repair as it cannot play Blu-Rays which it could out the factory 'as new'. They either have to repair it or swap it.

They will however won't make it easy for you!
Tbh in my experience these cases are usually quite easily solved :)

They'll look at the model code and see that this laptop comes with x discrete graphics card and then they'll look at the motherboard and note the fact that x discrete graphics card isn't there at which time they'll order the proper motherboard or the graphics daughter board ;)

fair enough. I had a nightmare with Sony over a Vaio laptop. Basically the graphics card which funnily enough was an nVidia 8400 had overheated. This in turn had warped the motherboard and stopped the whole laptop booting.

This happened 2months out of warranty at the 14month mark. I had a hell of a battle and many phone calls to Sony helpdesk but in the end won after I pointed out a EU reg which states most electrical products (which includes PC's, Laptops, kettles, Microwaves) are only fit for purpose if they last more than 24months "under reasonable use and conditions".

Sony.....Never again.

Agreed. As with 99% of laptops it's just an Acer or a Compal or whatever that's been stuck inside a casing with Sony branding on the outside. Sony might for instance pay a little extra for a better grade of component whilst some of the less well known manufacturers might lower binned components.

Personally I never buy laptops purely because they're more prone to failure than desktops.

If they've not done anything with the HDD there shouldn't be any need for different drivers but those are famous last words. Perhaps uninstall the graphics card and reinstall it in device manager.

Im going to fire Vista back on it :yuck:
the OE Sony driver will only install on Vista, and the Nvidia drivers direct from Nvidia wont install on the Vaios
however you are right, the Windows 7 install should still work on it,but installing vista will confirm it and im sure Sony will state they dont support W7 on this model

Edit: I actually expected ot get the PC back with an OE install of Vista on it
I thought this would be standard procedure to confirm it was all working?

edit, edit: uninstalling made no difference. standard VGA adapter is installed
