Loss of windows 'sounds'

Right - this problem is really ripping my knitting

Could do with some pointers as how this problem can be fixed please. I have lost all windows 'sounds' on my PC, been without them for a few months

All the drivers on my pc are up to date, I have perfect sound through media player etc. That's not the problem. Correct file in the registry as far as I can see, have trawled various forums/microsoft with no better idea of how to fix it
The only issue I can see is as follows.

Go to control panel - sounds and devices - sounds - windows default.

I only have 2 entries in there for windows, checked on the works pc on nightshift last night and there's loads there, so where the blo*dy hell have mine gone?

More importantly, how do I get them back

You'll have to do a repair by the "sounds" of it.

Indeed I do - but having just put on service pack 3 won't using the disc 'revert' the system to sp2?

Nope, not if you do a repair.

Your thinking of System Restore.

Will try and back everything up and give it a go

Tried the repair and it crashed the system - so mu gut instinct is there was a problem with the previous installation of XP.

In the end piggy-backed the hard drive off the PC and dumped all my files onto a laptop, wiped the hard drive on the PC completely and started again.

Works perfectly
