Linksys Router problem

I wonder if any of the IT specialists can offer some advice here. My friend has two computers at his house and uses a Linksys WAG 54G Router (ADSL) to connect them both to the internet.

One computer is connected directly to the router via an ethernet cable, the other computer uses an ariel PC card to connect with the router. The two computers are NOT networked.

All was working fine until a couple of days ago when the internet went dead on both machines. Since then neither machine has been able to connect to the internet and Tiscali claim that the router has 'reset' itself. For what it's worth the phone line is working fine with the telephone.

Apparently to configure the router you have to go to this address:

http://192.168.1.1

But if I try to access it on my computer I get nothing. I'm assuming it's only supposed to work on the computer that has the router?

What advice can you give to my friend and what should he check to eliminate any possible causes for his no internet connection? Are there any known fault with the Linksys routers? What steps should he do to try and get re-connected, and are Tiscali right that the router may have reset itself?

I have to confess to being a bit of a noob when it comes to routers so please explain in simple language

It is a LAN address - and is the router gateway address in this case.

It should be able to be accessed from the PC that is directly connected into the back of it. He should know once he is in, due to the login box appearing.

Once in, he can reconfigure the ISP details and also the wireless network. How can you say both machines aren't networked when using the same router?

I use a Linksys WRT54GL, and have no issues with it [but then again, I don't run Linksys firmware ]

Re: Linksys Router problem

Cheers for the advice Stu It turned out in the end that the router had reset itself along with the password to configure it. They got someone in who discovered this and then set it all up again.

When I said both computers aren't networked, what I meant is that they both share the same router but neither machine can access information from each other. My terminology may have been wrong, or I've misunderstood what a network is

Anyway, all is well and good now
