Wireless Set-up

Ahhhhh. We've got one of these at home http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/__Networking-M...d=p3286.c0.m14 and I've just brought this with the new laptop http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/__Networking-M...d=p3286.c0.m14 and the cables arn't compatible. Can I just use a cable converter thing?

The cable coming out of the modem thingy is a UBS one, and the in-put on the wireless box is a network yellow thingy. Or do I need a different wireless?

Thanks, Jon.

Re: Wireless Set-up

I've never seen a USB to Ethernet converter for modem's; to be honest you'l probably find it easier to buy an Ethernet Modem

. Is this a new box to replace the Sagem?

All I know is we can't change from Tiscali and go Wireless that way because we currently get it free

Jon.

Re: Wireless Set-up

Plug in the cable coming from your phone point in to the back of the router. Not the USB cable.

Then connect the cable the came with the ROUTER to the Ethernet on your pc or laptop.

Phone one won't fit into the Wireless box, all it has is a power and a load of ethernet plugs. I was hoping I would be able to do what you suggested when I brought it.

Yeah it is, my bband at home came with a XyZel modem thing, replaced it with a D-Link cable (ethernet) modem. Works perfectly fine; there's quite a few options on the market. I think the one I bought was £30 but that was a few years ago and included next day registered delivery...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D-LINK-ADSL-RO...d=p3286.c0.m14 Is it one of these?

So is it like my sagem, I plug phone (and power in this case) in, and the out plug is a ethernet, not usb, and this plugs into the Netgear?

Jon.

You'd have to set up a network bridge (I can't explain how they work; they never seem to for me ) for that to work on the laptop. Also means the laptop will have to be on and connected to both when anyone else wants to use the internet.

The one I have at home is this:
Amazon.co.uk: D-Link DSL-300T ADSL Ethernet... Amazon.co.uk: D-Link DSL-300T ADSL Ethernet...
By all means look around, there must be a cheaper one available!

So I still need the Netgear, the D-link isn't wireless? (Just thought I'd check)

I feel bad, I'm normally ok with computers, but wireless and networking has me stumped

Thanks for all the help.

That D-Link you linked to is simply a new modem, so yes you would have to keep the NetGear for it's Networking; and there shouldn't be any maker compatability issues either (so long as they're both observing the industry standards and I can't see any excuse for them not to)

Eh?

He wouldn't need the Netgear one. The D-Link will do the job on it's own.

The router he's bought is one to make a wired network wireless. Why would he need it when the D-Link will not only connect to the internet, but make it Wi-Fi?

EDIT: Realised you only linked to a modem and not a modem router... Just get a modem router... Hang on and I will link to the corrects ones you need.

This is what you need...
