What Laptop

Hi all. Im planning on buying a laptop sometime between now and Sept (more likly to be now though)

I'm wondering if anyone knows where the best place, either online or in the shops, is to get a good deal and price, and what models I should look at.

Does anywhere do student discounts?

budget is between £500-£700 and it has to be a Toshiba, Sony, or Acer. Deffo not Dell or HP!!!

Any help would be greatly recieved. I've currently looked at the Toshiba A300-1BZ at £700, but the similar A200-28P is £600 and the only noticeable difference spec wise is a HD smaller of only 50Gb which doesn't bother me as I have a 320Gb External HD.

Jon.

Are you adamant on that? Lots of good laptops available from outside the 'big name' manufacturers, for much less than the 'big name' prices. For example, www.novatech.co.uk

Re: What Laptop

I didn't see that comment, will teach me not to talk on MSN while reading.

Why, Toshiba, Sony or Acer?

I wouldn't buy a Sony or Acer imo and can't diss a Tosh cos I am typing on it now and will BSOD if I do.

Asus are a trusted brand though, good build quality and excellent customer service.

Acer, because practically no problems, but when there are they're customer services are great, Sony for snob value, but really to costly I think, and Toshiba because we've never had problems with them, and they come with back-up disks, and others don't (according to the bloke in PC world who seemed to own every computer if you know what I mean)

I've found a Toshiba A300-1BZ for £575 BIN inc P+P new on eBay compaired to £700 in the shops, a £125 saving is good, but what about if it goes wrong?

Jon.

Re: What Laptop

@ Acer customer service. When my 2 week old £1200 laptop started to become a frying pan they didn't want to know.

As for back up disks, most PC's and Laptops require you to burn your own from when you first turn on. That's why they don't come with back-up disks.

As for the eBay thing, you'll get 1 year warrenty from the Manufactuer. That's it. Same as anywhere else. PC World will just get some div to stick a screwdriver in it and then send it back to the Manufacter anyways.

Re: What Laptop

Well, I've got my nice new Toshiba now .

Was the £700 one. I insisted on a deal though when I got it from PC world, and got the usual 'they're as cheap as they can be' crap, started to walk out, and he changed his mind.

Was £699.99 for the Laptop, and We haven't yet gone wireless at home, so got a Netgear wireless kit, was £99.99 down to £59.99 but as part of the deal they done that for £49.99, I've also taken out the accidental warrentie as I've read all the small print and it's rather good, and have to the first month of that thrown in free.

So my bank balance is a little unhealthy now, just hope car dosen't need anything for MOT next month

Not a Dell lover. They're ok, but just don't do anything for me. HP is something else though!

Yes, but purly for the damage cover, but might cancel in a few months. It won't be going in for servicing, can sort all that out my self, or get dad to do it.

they do nothing to laptop. wouldnt be suprised if they actually jst left it on the side and gave it back a day later.

tbh someone else cant service your laptop as they dont know what you use it for. they can clean off programems as they dnt know if you use them or not etc.

is it vista or xp (im guessing vista)

if you dont really know what needs doing then just search for pc servicing or pc clean up on google
