Re: Stupid question but need to ask

You're stuck with DDR2. Are you going to buy a new PC anytime soon?

Don't you mean he's stuck with "DDR" DDR-400 PC3200 is DDR not DDR2.

As for OP their not backwards compatible the slot is slightly different so you need 'DDR' rated at PC3200 spec if thats what you have in already.

Sorry! Brainfart. You are completely right. He's stuck with DDR not DDR2.

Re: Stupid question but need to ask

The amount you can upgrade to is limited by the amount of slots on the motherboard, and whether your going to try and keep the current RAM, what motherboard do you have?

2 to 4 slots is normal and 3 is not exactly unheard of, some benifit from Dual Channel aswell (hence why I asked about the motherboard).

Its also limited by the Mainboards BIOS / Memory controller too. Some only allow 1GB per stick for example so you did right to ask so we can double check.

huh? back compatible?

i assumed DDR2 having the two was a second generation and replaced DDR.

i currently have 4 slots, one with the 256 in. so was going to get either 1 or 2 gig to boost it.

was just asking as DDR2 is cheaper on ebuyer.

Yeah its not backwards compatible as in you can't put DDR2 memory in a DDR slot and vice versa.

Yeah I couldn't remember what restricts it at the time of posting.

www.overclockers.co.uk might be cheaper (it can be but usually isn't!)
www.dabs.co.uk might also be a good option but i haven't looked at their site in a long time!

Kingston Value Ram is OK.

Personally I'd just put the money towards a new PC. You can get 4gb of DDR2 800 for that price.

You can get a whole lot of PC for less than 200 pounds these days
