Router has finally packed up after 5 years of 24/7 running.

so now i need a new one...
i have Virgin media 20MB :Dand even though it's technically mums connection, as i'm the only one complaining about it i have to pay for it, so something reasonable...

What do you use?
what should i avoid?

Cheers for your advice :D

Noooo dave! Avoid netgear not belkin! I got netgear free when I changed ISP and it was so much trouble for the 3 months I had it. I lost internet connection regularly, the signal strength was the worst i've ever experienced and it was just a pain in the arse altogether. I'd recommend Belkin, the signal strength is amazing, it never cuts out, and you can connect many computers up to it, I have 3 running on a Belkin and there is no less in speed. At worst, get Linksys.

Yea would agree stay away from netgear! Mine went out the window eventually (no literally, it ended up in the garden)

I run a Linksys WRT54GL [linux version] with DD-WRT firmware (y)

It is on 24/7 and takes a lot of punishment with torrenting [hence the enhanced firmware].

but they always break before the warenty is up so you get a new one every year:confused:

Yea I had 3 of them, then it broke again at a crucial moment and I lost my temper:eek:. Went out the window, never looked back. All of mine seemed to suffer from overheating, even when I put fans next to them. Plus they would always disconnect on wireless.

I'm still somehow running a Netgear RP114 in my setup. That little beast has been solid for ages.

Shame their current stuff is about as stable as the british council office in Moscow (sorry for poor joke ;))

Never had any issues with D-Link and although not a fan of Linksys, not heard anything bad.

Do avoid Belkin though, god that stuff is sh**e!

I'd recommend Draytek......we've got these running at 50+ sites and have never had a problem.

Linksys is another good one.

Netgears are ok but not to be left on 24/7 because of their heat issues.

We've replaced more Belkins then I'd care to remember.

i'm quite tempted by the WRT54GL cheapest place i found was £40... anyone know anywhere cheaper :p

What does the Linux firmware do to aid torrents (i have a pc on 24/7 leeching/seeding) ;)

Do NOT BUY the WRT54G - if you want to do torrenting, you may as well not even open the box and throw it straight into the bin ;) - there is an inherent problem with them, due to remembering number of open connections, and then it falls down, needing a reset.

You need the Linux version because it has more flash memory - which means you can then flash across the better version of DD-WRT (y)

Good call, so i take it the GL is fine? i think i'll go for the one on Ebuyer...39.99 doesn't seem that bad.

Linksy are good routers. However, Belkin all the way. By far the best routers on the Market. I don't like Comet and Currys, but they actually do an alright prices and you get them straight away. I just updated from a Linksy to the Belkin G MIMO cos Linksy kept needing to be restarted. If i'd had the £110 I would have gone for the Belkin N Series. This router is going to be the best for years! Range is huge, speed is great and price isn't bad. Considering £50 routers now used to cost £150+

just checked and cheaper now.. http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=421081

Yeah, good price - have fun with the flashing (y) and don't brick it ;) you are basically kissing your warranty goodbye. You will need to ensure you have the correct revisions, etc.

BUT the extra features you get with any of the WRT firmwares are immense - makes the standard Linksys interface look dire.
