Yesterday afternoon my cinq suddenly cut out with no warning whilst in slow moving town traffic. Conditions were bone dry and there was no moisture about. Despite all the electrical systems seeming to work just fine and the starter happily whirling away like a mad thing I just couldn't get anything to fire, even in the slightest. Having been unable to get anything to work I eventually called in the AA  (who came very quickly) but he couldn't isolate the problem either. All we managed to do was determine that there is no power GOING to the coil units and all of the fuses seem to be intact. Using the red key didn't work either ,so now I'm a bit stumped. Can anyone shed some light on this baffling little problem??

D. Crank sensor? Why would that cause an instantaneous ignition failure? And no, I'm not trying to sound like a smartass, I'm genuinely non-plussed. Thanks.

Well, I think the LT outputs come directly from the ECU and are not fused directly. Of course some parts of the ECU supply are fused but if you have checked those and they are all ok, then don't worry about them......have you checked all the maxi fuse in the engine bay? Think the Cinq has them as well?

I doubt your ECU has gone and died, so there must be some other fault that is causing the ignition failure, I would guess no LT output is just one of the symptoms IMHO.

When you turn the key to stage one, do you hear the fuel pump prime at the rear of the car? As that is also controlled by the same main fuse as the coils, injectors, fuel vapour solenoid etc.

I may be talking c**p here though ;) but trying to help :D

Signal from crank sensor informs when the ECU should send neg pulse to coil (thus firing plugs) so no crank signal no spark.

Kristian/D/T14086. Many thanks for your quick and helpful responses. The car is now being looked at and I'll confirm what the problem is when I've found out. It's certainly been extremely useful of having somewhere to start (unlike the car!) Thanks again guys.

No probs :) I think the other two know an awful lot more than me though and are prob right (y)

I'm off to read up how the crank sensor works now ;)

Not at all mate, after all we are all just guessing as its very hard to diagnose a fault without actually physically working on the car.:)
