Engine Oil

Hello, love the site, long time lurker first time poster.

I was just checking over my cinquecento today, checking liquid levels and i noticed that my oil was just above min, I bought the car in the summer, and it has done a fair amount of miles around 4-5k, so i came and looked on here , to find what engine oil most people use and found it was castrol GTX magnatec stuff.

I was wondering , as i don't know what oil the previous owner filled the car with, is it ok to mix brands of oil, or do you have to change the whole lot. The oil itself is clear, and the previous owner changed the oil filter every year, with the oil change. Just a bit unsure thats all, as you cant mix coolant was just wondering if the same thing applied with engine oil.

Thanks in advance.

My car is a P reg Cinquecento Sporting in Broom Yellow .

EDIT: I just looked through at the last MOT the car had, and the engine oil is castrol GTX Magnatec 10w/40, so should I just top-up with that??

Re: Engine Oil

All modern engine oils will mix, but as said above, you may as well change it anyway if you are not sure when it was last done.

Re: Engine Oil

Any quality 10W40 will do for top up purposes. 4 to 5 K in 6 months is about average mileage, and you know when it was last changed, so I would top up and do an oil and filter change at 12 months or 12000 miles since the last service, whichever comes first.

Cheers

Re: Engine Oil

Hello, again

I just looked at when the MOT is due, a few months away, so I will change the oil and filter then, and just top it up now.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Engine Oil

Why run for a few months with potentially crap/dirty/old oil, when you can do it now and still pass the MOT, they don't check for stuff like that!?

Even if you are paying for a service when you have the MOT, to do it now and properly will cost you £10-£15, not much and def worth any potential problems you may encounter. Engine wear, blockages etc.

If yo do pay for a service/oil change at MOT time, you will know you have a lovely clean engine inside
Just my opinion,

Kristian

Re: Engine Oil

I'd be inclined to change it now. I like Magnatec but if you join ClubCento and live anywhere near Derby, Fluffy the Impaler will do you 5 litres of Fully Synthetic (shame it's only a 5W40, but should be fine on a non turbo motor) for £11.80 for 5 litres.
